Can I hire a Machine and drive myself

Hi all,

I need to get a machine in for a week or so do to some ground work. I have used 3-6 tonne in the past, but is it possible to hire out a 10-15 tonne machine and operate it myself. I know what's involved and will be able to do the work myself. I just thought this would be cheaper:rolleyes:. but would I be able to hire one???

Any plant people here?

I believe u can as once it leaves the hire yard or they drop off u are on ur own:)
I looked at hiring a telescopic 'Manvik' thingy: no problem, even though I dont know what's what?

I don't know about a machine that size, or even where you could hire one without an operator, the smaller stuff, yes.

call a local plant hire, they should be able to point you in the correct direction, unless you are fully confidant on a large machine you will end up doing more damage than its worth.

A freind of mine "saved a packet" on excavations . Only to lose much more than he "saved" due to over wide and overdeep footings needing a fair bit more concrete poured in. Some things only appear to be simple .

no worry for me, I wont be touching the site for the house, its the surrounding ground and drive way. I will be contracting site excavation out to the building contractor. cheers for the concern;), ,, , no-way would i touch that come to think of it.

Instead of hiring a big 10 Tonne, would you consider buying a something smaller. Either a mini-digger or maybe something kind of mid-sized like a JCB. If the papers etc are to be believed, you can pick them up fairly cheaply at auctions and the like these days.

It would always be a handy yoke to have around the place. I'm going to look into it myself this summer.
