First Thomann purchase

I just made my first Thomann purchase there on Sunday and received a confirmation email the next day but today I received a strange email, this is what it says:

Sorry, but due to high value and nature of items ordered we would need further credit card confirmation to proceed.

    We would ask you to provide us with a copy of the front and back of your credit card to prove that the card has not been cloned, along with one form of identification, for example, either;

    1. A copy of a photo drivers license

    2. A copy of your passport, or

    3. A copy of the header of your credit card statement or utility bill showing your address details

Please note both the copy of the credit card and ID are needed to proceed with the order, understandably we do advise customers to blank out the middle 8 numbers on the credit card, along with the CVC code on the back, to avoid any concerns regarding fraud.

Please make sure that your card is signed, as the card is not valid until it has been signed.

    Please send all details via e-mail to - international@thomann.de or via Fax - 0049 9546 9223 24

**Quoting your Customer number at all times**

This is a one-off request, and if you are asked again for information of this kind with future orders please notify us immediately!

Has anyone else received a similiar email after purchasing on Thomann? I don't really see the purpose of this procedure and it's going to be very awkward for me to do. Also the card I paid with wasn't a proper credit card but a payzone mastercard so therefore it doesn't have any card holder name on it. So it would probably be quite pointless sending a photo copy of that. Any thoughts or advice? I just want my product as soon as possible!

Could it be a Phishing mail?

    Give them a call.

Is it for a lot of money.. sometimes they do stuff like that I've heard for security. I had to make a transfer into their A/c for my Mac before the ball got rolling.

    Strange but true.

I wouldn't have considered it a large amount of money really, it was for €217. I've sent an email to their customer services dept enquiring about it. I'm not going to send anything to them until I get a reply. It just seems a bit curious to me for a transaction just over €200.

Perfectly normal for a new customer/first order. As the email states, just black out the CC number and CCV number and the card is pretty much worthless anyway.

Ok but I wonder if that fact that the card is not going to have the card holder name on it (except for the signature) will make it a bit more complicated?

i remember having to do this years ago with my first purchase. 5 or 6 years ago actually. so long ago i actually had to find a fax machine to do it.

They do this quite a bit - they tried it on me after I'd spent well over a grand with them less than a year earlier. I wasn't happy and went elsewhere. Went back to them for another purchase a few months later and no id was required. Apparently this practice is common enough in Germany. They will let you pay by bank transfer if you wish, but I'd rather have the insurance that goes with credit card purchases.

I'm surprised that they would consider that a large amount. Why not just ring them. As further confirmation, the fax number should usually be pretty similar to the Thomann number.

Must be pretty standard enough practice then, bloody awkward though, means I have to bring all this crap into work and fax it off, don't have a scanner.

this is standard routine for thomann on your first buy, just send the letter and get on with it.

Had this before with some company. All I did was take photos of the necessary items and emailed them to them saying that I didn't have access to a scanner. Next day the money was taken and the goods were shipped.

yea, i got this from thomann on my first purchase, a few years back. It didn't seem strange to me, i think I remember reading it in their Terms and Conditions or something.

I just took pictures of my credit card and passport, put them straight to the computer, brought them into Micro**** Paint or something and blacked out the relevant information, like they recommended. That was all, didn't take long, payment was done either that day or the next.

    Nothing to worry about
