    Hey folks,

I'm just wondering if any of ye could get me started with making iPhone apps :)

I just finished a BA in Computer Science, I can program quite proficiently in java, and I'm decent enough at C++.

I'll mainly just be making apps for my own and others' enjoyment, so I won't be taking it too seriously!

But nevertheless I could use some help getting started :)

    Thanks for any help

Stanford's iTunes U iPhone Development course is supposed to be pretty good.

    Thanks for that, looks good

It says you need an Intel Mac running Leopard though :( Any way around this? I've got an iBook G4, pretty sure that's Power PC

    Cheers

I have heard it being done, but it's very hacky and I'm not sure how reliable it is. The cheapest Mac you can buy is the Mac Mini (€600), unfortunately.

As for development resources, download and install the iPhone SDK as soon as you can. It has everything you need to get started - docs, examples, sample code. There are videos on the developer site too.

Also, this book is like the bible for Cocoa / Objective-C programmers. Well worth the purchase.

    Some Irish resources:

    Hope that helps.

    Vinny.

Im reading Learn Objective–C on the Mac and Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK and working my way through the Stanford vids. Apple also have some getting started vids for iPhone 2.0 and 3.0. Not sure if you have to have paid for the dev program first though (def for 3.0 vids anyway). Nothing beats getting stuck in to the code though.

www.laptopsdirect.ie are cheapest around for a new Mac and Adverts.ie is always good for 2nd hand. I have a Mac mini ATM and a MacBook ariving any day now. Mac Mini is fine for Dev. Aplle are due to either drop the MacBook price or introduce a budget model in the next couple of months (announced in June at the Dev conference maybe?).
