    Hiya
Don't have experience buying them but was there 2 years ago and it seemed a great place to buy a ring. Diamonds International and Colombian Emeralds are the best and you get a certificate with every purchase. Americans were buying loads when i was in the shops! They came off the Cruise ships and just spent lots! Got some emerald earrings for my mum and it was certified and they are still perfect.
Only thing is if i was going buying a ring i would go to South Africa......more choice, better diamonds and SOOOO cheap (from personal experience)!!! Plus 14% Vat back!! Plus a cracking holiday!

    narsil.

what do u mean 14% vat back? are the rings in SA much cheaper than ireland? why would you think the diamonds are better there??

    thanks

Well when you buy clothes, make up or jewellery in SA you keep your receipt and when you go to the airport you show your items with the receipts. For clothes and make up you get 14% back in a cheque straightaway and the cheque for jewellery comes in the post a few weeks later.
As for the diamonds, i was there with a SA friend whose own diamonds are SA bought and the quality is the nearest to flawless(I cant remember the grades exactly but the salesman showed me the chart as i was looking). A 1 carat solitaire on platinum was the equivilent to €5000 before the 14% VAT back!!! In Keanes that would be c. €15000 (priced it when we got back). Now thats some difference!

Well i bought a pair of earrings at a jewelley store called Forma Viva in Johannesburg and i'd say theres a branch of them in Cape Town too. I found the best place was the Canal Walk shopping centre in Cape Town. Lots of Jewellers shops there and all varying tastes and prices. It helps that the shopping centre is the size of a Theme Park to wander round!
Very best of luck with it and she's gonna be a lucky girl to get such a thoughtfully chosen ring!
