Was at the launch night of this a couple of weeks back.
Good concept for a tv show, but what the hell is the point of doing a show like this and screening it at 11.45pm?

Give it a good slot and I'm sure it'd be a big success, but I can't see it getting much interest with it being on so late.

Agreed, although no doubt it will be available to view on the RTE website. They seem to be putting everything up on that now.

They always put anything about independent music (and even just music) in a graveyard slot.

Great concept for a show anyway. It's nice to see Irish fringe genres like rap getting a look in as well. I hope The Infomatics surprise a few people.

Yeah, saw the ad for this. Ridiculous time to put it on alright.

NPR's All Song's Considered did something very similar a while back, they're available to download as podcasts. Very entertaining.

I remember years ago Something Happens did a couple of Sat gigs in McGonagles and had the live album (I know Ray Harman) available on vinyl 48 hours (i think) later.. Would have made an interesting program to have recorded that process...

I used be in a band called The Bad Babysitters with Ray Harman .... we didn't, however, make an album !

    Interesting indeed ...

The time of the show has changed from 1145 to 1125 tonight

Wow. This show was largely excellent. I voted for Sweet Jane, and I've never voted for anything on the TV in my life. The fact you're buying a single makes it more digestable somehow. I hope the show does well because this would be an awesome format to have on one or twice a year.

Not to be too negative, but I found it quite disappointing. An awful lot of introducing you to the artists, and not enough about the development and production of the songs IMO. Great to see something like this happen, so don't get me wrong, but the programme itself doesn't really do much but 'Here's artist (big spiel about who they are, where they are etc). They have 12 hours to write a song. Ta-da. End.' Should really spend more time on process IMO. Even summarise how the song was created at the end.

I'd agree to some extent. Even if they perhaps added another 5 minutes to the running time or something.

I suppose people producing shows assume the audience is more interested in 'the human angle' re: the struggle and emotions than explaining the process of making music.

I'd assume there may be alot more focus into the process in the 2nd round shows after the different groups have been introduced. Of course, they may just waste half the show doing a flash back and re-introduction and talking to the musicians about 'how much this means to them' stuff.

Gave it another watch tonight. Not for me tbh, I'll be tuning out. Would like to see the 'producing the song' element. Its just tacked on here though. Pity.

I've been looking forward to this all week. Really enjoyed the last one. I just think that the way its put together is very messy. All the music in the show should be just from the two bands involved that week. I've heard music from Republic of Loose and David Kitt tonight along with some others. It makes things complicated. We never get a feel of the bands ''sound''.
My other gripe it that there's no introduction to the bands song at the end of the show. They just hold up their cd and suddenly it goes straight into the song. I barely realised the music playing is actually THE song. That said, its really good to see Irish music get some recognition on TV. Well done to R.S.A.G. last week

    Watched it tonight.

Dirty Epics were pretty good.. Never heard their Music before.

Agree with one of the previous posters though.. They should have spent a little bit longer on the creation process.. its just like 12hrs on Speed the way it is. I was just settling into it & it was over! :D

But they have to make the program digestable & entertaining.. and it definitely was, so they've nailed a good 80% of it IMO.

Apparently the bands sign over the mechanical rights to the song for 1 year. ie: They don't see and revenue from the download.
“if all these Irish bands were in different parts of the world, they’d be the biggest bands in the world”

Quote of the week from Sweet Jane member...

 This is an absolute disgrace. What is sadder, is that artists would still be clambouring over each other for a place on the show. Things like, 'well its just great that something like this show is happening'. I better stop now before I go off on rant mode:)

    Oh dear.

agree with all above. Awful treatment of the creative process and full of inane soundbites...of which I'm sure the people are a little embarrassed - wasnt the concluding soundbite of the first program one of the Sweet Jane members saying "at the end of the day, something will be there that wasn't there before...and that's cool"

Whoops...I can see his point but...jaysus. In his defence he proabbly didnt think a national boradcaster would use it as the concluding quote on a 'big-enough' TV production...

do you ever get the feeling that musicians/artists shouldnt be doing this kind of thing and should just be getting on with what they do best? A lot of musicians, incl myself (periodically of course) are magnificently full of sh*t and dissapointingly one-dimensional so sometimes a show like this is guaranteed to fail, especially if its showcasing the personalities and not the creative aspects.

New media seems to demand the all-invasive approach to bands and artists now - sometimes is works, often it backfires. I think we all still love our enigmas and 'meeting' them is often dissapointing. Not to say these people are enigmas mind you but I would have time for a lot of their music.
