Any thoughts on an older 911?

I have always wanted an older Porsche 911. I like the cars, plus believe they will gain value over time.

Does anyone have experience on maintenance? Shoulbe be easy as they were quite simple for years.

It costs little too much, but I am sure I could talk the price down a little.

That's looks extremely cheap even taking into account the high milage. Maybe too good to be true cheap. My mate's father owns an 83 SC and they are quite expensive to maintain. He's of the opinion that there is nobody really competent enough to do maintenance on aircooled Porsches in the Republic so he sends it to the UK for maintenance.

Once the car has been maintained properly then reliability should not be an issue. Personally I would run a mile from anything without a FSH. The earlier Targas were notorious for leaking roofs so that's something to watch out for. At 177K miles a lot of the aircooled stuff would have had a top end rebuild. If this hasn't then you should look at it as a big expense coming down the road.

If it is for real, have it thoroughly checked over by someone who knows what they are looking at. I've seen a lot of lemons out there that have been neglected for years.

why is it expensive to maintain? I always though the parts and everyting under the hood(trunk) is quite simple.

Long story short: been there, done that. Nothing in the least cheap about running them.

However, that said, fine car :) That one in the ad looks nice, but it'd want to be well inspected by Someone Who Knows. Too easy to buy a lemon.........

Where are you planning on getting it serviced ? ....'cos that'll help you decide.

As Ronnie said, if it's had a rebuild, it should be good for another while, but if it hasn't.......be prepared to raid the piggy bank.

Lots more on this very subject next door :D

..depends on the use it'll get.

With a fresh motor, it'll need minimum to keep it happy, but do bear in mind that's a 30+yr old car, so it'll always need something doing to it........

And, have you a garage ?

I have a place for it, but nothing fancy. As I am looking for a bigger place with a decent garage anyway this should not be an issue in the future.

The "will exchange for a L200" thing would put me off.. not sure why.. that car is really well detailed.. it just looks like its rolled off the production line.

Would love to see what bhp its putting down on the road with 177000miles on.

I presume you have seen the other topic where most of your questions were asked and answered but there are plenty of people in this country with expertise enough to service a 911. They 'aint rocket science.
