    Is anyone a fan?

It drives me ****ing mental when kids harp on about their favourite emo bands and then list off a load of chart topping goth pop.

I came across American Football- not the sport- about four years ago and have loved their music ever since. Unfortunately they split a long time ago so no chance of ever seeing them but nonetheless, top quality. For anyone who's not heard of them but curious, think genuinely emotive lyrics (not about wrist slitting cos your boyfriend did blah blah blah), intricate, clean guitar riffs and a subtle bassline. I really really recommend.

Also, through listening to them I've come across a whole host of top bands like the appleseed cast, cap'n jazz etc. There's a whole world of it to be explored.

    Try this for starters

Ignore the video itself, it's some American goon trying to be arty. And check the little riff on 2:14...probably one of the best I've ever heard.

Yeah, American Football were sweet. I really like that whole Chicago mathy-emo scene, bands like Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Joan of Arc, Ghosts and Vodka etc. anything Kinsella is sweet. On a slightly different note, Owen's stuff is great too (not sure if it's Mike or Tim who is Owen).

Oh and there some seriously awesome bands doing this stuff at the moment too. Maybe a little less of the whole atmospheric, instrumental-based sound of American Football. But do check out Algernon Cadwallader, slightly less restrained, slightly yelped vocals. Tubelord and This Town Needs Guns are UK bands. This Town Needs Guns' guitarist is often rumoured to have been taught by one of the Kinsellas, a real internet myth, I think.

I love those Kinsellas. And Victor and Sam are great of course.
Joan of Arc is playing in Whelan's on the 31st of May if anyone's interested.

Cap'n Jazz are excellent. The problem is the genre got too pop-oriented and ended up attracting the wrong crowd.Although Fall Out Boy are a decent pop group when all's said and done.
