    Hey,

Are they a big no-no? Does anyone know where to order them from or buy in Ireland? I just want to get some opinions... would it be a big mistake to get a moissanite as opposed to a diamond?

Have to say I never heard of them, but just googled it, and by the sounds of it you can have a bigger and brighter stone / sparkle, for less money than a diamond.
Depends on what you think your OH would like though, and what you can or cannot afford! TBH I though your topic was a bit pretentious when I seen it first, it was a bit like "Is 10k enough to spend on a big rock for the engagement ring?"...(sorry but who cares?) Is anyone going to examine it that closely anyway?

Thanks for the reply,I don't see how I sounded pretentious tbh.. I'm the OH lol.. We're buying a ring together! We will not be out of college fully for about 4 years so we would like to pay a reasonable amount for a nice ring instead of spending loads and then be under pressure to pay for college fees and such.. I've researched diamonds a bit and moissonite.. I would like to get an idea from someone regarding the quality of moisssonite..

Sorry, just a bad day! Have seen a few posts before and it just sprung to mind when I seen it first.
As I said I hadn't heard of it before, so sorry I can't be of much help to you. But it does sound like a good idea if you could find somewhere to have a look at it, it would save you breaking the bank. Best of luck anyway, hopefully someone else can help you.

it's hardness is a good bit less than that of diamond, so it will pick up some scratches over time.

synthetic moissanite has a yellowish or greenish tinge, so i'd tend to say you should consider it as a stone in it's own right, it's not a great diamond simulant.

also, it looks quite different to a diamond, much more like costume jewelry. there was a shop in dundrum that sold it, but i think they closed.

If you are on a budget and picking it together - I got mine from www.diamonds.ie

Your money goes so much further than the highstreet. It's really special - they meet you in a nice hotel in town and there are trays of diamonds. You can make a day of it! I think Fraser (the owner) actually lives in New York so that's were the ring was made for me...very STTC:)

That site redirects to www.buy4now.ie with no diamonds mentioned in the search on the site...?

Ahh it should have been www.diamond.ie

Ah thanks OP this is new material to me. Never heard of this stone before. Well, why not!! It looks good and if it suits your current budget then it should be a no brainer.

Just for the story: my Mum's engagement ring is a beautiful blue gem, nothing to do with diamonds. It's "the" engagement ring and still 40 years later: she loves it.
