    Hi,

Wondering if anyone can suggest a pub in cologne near enough to the lanxess arena for a group get together. I;ve searched google but looking for some personal, we had a great night in that place or this place was a dump steer clear advice.

    Thanks

    hey,
i used to live in Cologne a few years back and have been back many many times. To be honest, not much action in and around the Lanxess arena (used to be called the kolnarena) as it's on the quieter side of the river.

Your best bet would be to head towards the alter markt (old town) in the centre of town. Plenty going on in there. Cologne is a small walking city - it wouldn't take much more than 20 mins to walk from the alter markt to the arena (nice walk over the bridge) or else grab a cheap taxi.

Depending on what you are looking for there's about 3 irish pubs around the alter markt which tend to be good fun most nights - flanagans, the corkonian and Barney Vallelys - all good spots.

If you are getting out of dodge and want to avoid seeing anything remotely Irish for your trip (which I wouldn't blame you given our current predicament!) there are plenty of bars down around the alter markt and near to the river where you will have a good night.

The other side of town is much quieter and you'll have to do a bit more searching to find anywhere decent.

There are other little pockets of action in Cologne outside of the city centre - again Jameson irish pub out around friesenplatz - this area tends to be where the students hang out so if you're there mid week or with a younger crowd you should head out that way.

Cologne is a cracking city - not exactly Berlin as far as the nightlife goes - but it's a really beautiful city and unlike many German cities - given it's proximity to France it nearly feels more french than German.

anyway, hope this helps - enjoy your trip.

Check out zulpicher strasse near the university. A lot of good pub/clubs there, good for barhopping.
