I cant see this happening at all, doesnt really make financial sense and no way will Sky give us extra channels for free.

Sign up with the devil or disappear forever. I know which option i'd choose. Isn't Setanta Sports free to Virgin Media subscribers in the UK already

Setanta Sports News is. I don't think the rest of the channels are from what I read.

Setanta Sports 1, 2 and Golf also included if you are an XL subscriber.

    Article from Daily Mail:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/article-1179759/Setanta-negotiations-deal-BSkyB.html

And also a detailed discussion over on DS. Some members there think it may join Sky World. (See end of thread)

Hi Michael,I read both the links you gave ,thank you.

Digital Spy on its forthcoming channels from Sky forum have always said a sky sports 4 was a possibility,so i am assuming they have all in place to launch it after cherrypicking like vultures around Setanta.

What a shame if Setanta does go under and no competitors left.

    Setanta went crazy,no doubt!

at least though when Setanta gained rights to Premiership games Sky closed down Premplus(a further premium on top of their Premium sp1,2,3 and extra.
Imagine when Sky could they charged even more to those who were already paying for their sports premium package:mad:

So instead of paying for Premplus, Sky subscribers had to pay Setanta for the games that Setanta secured.

Fair enough, it led to competition in the soccer broadcast market but it mad little difference to the cost of viewing for a lot of subscribers.

It actually worked out a lot cheaper back in the days of prem+.

Prem+ used to cost approximately €60 where now Setanta costs a lot more per year.

Tghe EU ruling insisting on splitting up the match rights away from Sky just made it all more expensive to us the punters.

That would be true if you watched nothing but football. Setanta offer more than that and also 3pm games on Saturday which Prem+ didn't show

There's a few extra bits like rugby, but a lot of which was on RTE before Setanta grabbed it.

I'll be honest, I'd miss it if it went out of business. I like the variety it provides.

Hi IrishHomer,I only intended to make the point that Sky got greedy with Prem+ as did the FA.My main point was sky sports could have done very well and treated its subscribers with respect, there was no need for prem+,it was a case of milking the "punters" sheer greed!

Setanta tried to wrestle with Skys abuse of its wealth and succeded for a while, until Setanta expanded too fast and got just as greedy.
greed is mostly what has the world economy in the mess.

what would they do if soccer fans cancelled their subscriptions for a year in protest?

i think it would make the FA,overpaid players&sky have a deep think about who is really the important people in Soccer.ie the fans they have been ripping off to pay ridiculous salaries etc....

the only good thing to come from all that money going into soccer was in my opinion,it paid for the all seater stadiums and all the new safety features in grounds now.

that has all been paid for now and it,s time the joe soap soccer fan got to watch a match without having to roll around clutching their shin when they get their digital tv bill!

I liked the variety RTE provided (Heineken ERC, Magners League, Irish international soccer, the odd Premiership match, etc)...

And I only had to pay the TV licence (less than the Setanta subscription) to get them all......

TG4 showed some games but not as much as Setanta have shown.

Included in a Package is not "free".

No package on Pay TV has free channels. The composition is designed to make the package marketable.

Of course on Satellite, unlike cable, there are really free channels, but then you don't need a package to get them.

Given Setanta's situation the lower cost of sales and support of Sky having them in a Package and Sky paying Setanta, rather than overheads of call centre and card management and paying for encryption, carriage etc.

So Setanta dramatically slash costs but get a smaller but more stable revenue from Sky rather than direct from customers.

Sky have a more attractive package.

    Yes, looks a likely scenario.

You touched the very point with my scenario.

I have been subscribing to Sky for soccer since day one (must be almost 20yrs) and past couple of years to Setanta.

I decided in April enough was enough and i closed my Sky Account and Setanta is due to close in 3 days but they sent me the half price offer for 6 months or reduced special price for a year. I have to decide now on the Setanta offer and its very good value i think so i may keep it but not sure yet.

I hate to think my hard earned money helps ponces like "Christiano Ronaldo" pay for their hair gel and big 4X4s. :D

I bought two Freesat boxes that work well and for the first time in 20yrs i am skyless :o

Although I believe sentanta did prove that sky could be contended with, I think it just ended up costing the regular customer more money.

Like competition is great and all, but people ended up paying two subscriptions, one for sky sports and one for sentanta. It wasn't really competition more a necesity to have both!

I think it's funny with all the interactive features on sky that they still can't show every soccer match live on tv via the red button. They did it for the champion's league why not the premiership! Instead your left with people on camera watching the match and commentating on it. You might aswell listen to the radio ffs and this is what your paying your subscription for?!?! :D

One thing setanta is good for is the magner's league and the school boy rugby. Not much else really.

The Saturday 3pm blackout in the UK regarding televised football I reckon is the key factor. Of course this doesn't stop the possibility of Sky (or anyone else) doing such a service in the Irish Republic but it would probably not be viable for them to do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,002 ✭✭✭IrishHomer

In Spain now all Primera games are available on their DDT system.

And the games only cost €1 per match

It only commenced a few weeks ago there i believe.

Until all Premier League games are not played on Saturday ay 3pm then you wont see them all being televised on Sky or any other broadcaster coming from the UK.

If setanta do go down the swany, am i right in thinking there has to be some kind of competition against sky or can sky then just grab everything on offer & then charge what they want?

If Setanta do go will that mean no more 3pm sat kick offs? If so surely sky can show 3pm kick offs to Irish subscribers?

They could but why would they be bothered if people are going to subscribe anyway.

I don't think Sky or anyone are allowed to have more then 5 of the six premier league packages.

Sky could of course bid on other sporting events like Scottish Premier League, etc.

I think ESPN might step in and buy some of Setantas rights, they might even buy out Setanta, ESPN has been looking to get into the UK sport market.

I think ESPN will come in and buy them also. Sit and wait for Setantas value to plummet further then take over

Hopefully,Setanta can survive as stand alone. If Sky get hold of it they'll charge through the nose for the service. It'll force people into getting multiroom otherwise they won't have a chance of seeing all the matches they have access to. Its a win win for Sky,but as usual, not for us the consumer.

yeah good point....but i pay nearly €100 a month as is for my skyworld sub and multiroom, i dont want to pay another €22 for setanta, just to get ESPN...i dont watch uk soccer, only la liga, which is on sky sports anyway...pity there isnt a way to get ESPN stand alone

totally disagree - anything that puts setanta out of business is in my opinion a good thing - their service is nothing is overpriced, under quality and poorly administered with appalling customer service - not to mention how badly we are treated price wise compared to the UK from an Irish company. My preference would be to see them on one of the mixes and I can then see them on top of my sky sports if I want to for only a couple of quid extra. Most of the stuff they show is crap anyway.
