Anyone tell me why my front left tyre is wearing (badly) in the middle. All other tyres are perfect. I know it needs to be replaced but just wondering if there may be something that needs to be checked out, alignment etc? They are pirellis, 33k done ( i know, time to change tyres but why only front passenger side worn
    Thanks for any advice

check the pressure, too high and it'll wear out the centre quicker.

Yep. Definitely sounds like the tyre pressure is too high.

yeah, thought so, would that also explain why the car feels bumpier, ya know, like rougher on the road??

There is however reportedly an issue with the current Passat and uneven tire wear (seen it over on vwaudiforum.co.uk - here) that suggests it's a fault and needs a full 4-wheel alignment to cure.

A cousin of mine just went through three years with a TDI Passat, and went through loads of tyre in the time. Turns out the fella doing the tyre's for him kept putting on the incorrect tyre, (there is some tyre rating that the Passat TDI's need to have), which resulted in lots of quick wearing tyres. Make sure when you do change, you get the right tyre. I'm afraid I can't remember for the life of me which part of the tyre was incorrect.

Nothing special about Passats, there's always a balance between grip or longevity of tyres. Always found Pirellis biased towards grip..

A tyre wearing in the middle thread section is overinflated.

    No voodoo re alignment etc.

No, there's a certain rating tyre they need, could be a Y:confused:

Nah, tyre ratings relate to maximum speed, common across all ranges. If the alignment is correct and the inflation pressure is right there should be no wear problems with any decent tyre.

Passats are certainly nothing special in this regard...

Mine came shipped with Michelin Z's but have had Pirelli Y's for a while now. It's something about the weight for the size of the tyre for the 17" alloys etc.

Actually, that weight thing rings a bell. I'll let ye know eitherways.

There is also a specification for max weight, which, afaik, is indicated by the letter at the end.

If you have say 205/55r16 91v, the 91 is the load rating and v is speed rating. Passenger side always wears out faster and its probably over inflated by 2 to 4psi for your driving. Check the pressure when fitting a new tyre and bring it down a bit in the new one then

That would be the load rating.
Eg my car needs 225/40/18 XL for extra load
If I put normal tyres they will wear out a hell of a lot quicker.
Not a lot of places know the difference, it's just a stronger sidewall

    eg

My mistake - load rating is indicated by a two digit code.
