Aircon is it necessary???

For those of you who have air conditioning in the MH (not in the cab) is it necessary? Could you do without it in July in France?

For those of you who do not have airconditioning in the MH and have used your MH in July/August in France, would you think it is necessary? Does it get unbearably hot at night inside?

For those of you who have aircon in the cab or aircon that can be used via an inverter whilst on the move do you find it handy whilst on holidays in warmer countries??

    Your views/experiences appreciated.

Never wanted it in the living area, never needed it either (I don't get off this Island :o) ...electricity supply for it would be an issue anyway. Many southern campsites only supply enough amps to run the fridge ...switch on your aircon and the initial start-up surge in demand will darken the whole campsite.

I do wish however I had it in the cab. Driving in the sun behind that big panoramic window gives you that grilled chicken feeling sometimes :D

Could be useful in Ireland too , it should draw out excess moisture from the air.

Soft-start like in this one may just get it past the daft electrical supply :

France 2003, 38 degrees and I would have paid any money to get air conditioning. Ended up spending €10 on a garden sprayer to cool down instead. Not as flush with the cash these days so I'll hold off on the air conditioning for a while:D

Thanks for the replies so far.

Out of interest has anybody had air conditioning retro fitted to their MH?

Don't have it don't need it. have been in many hot places. Once and once only, hired a vehicle with air conditioning, made the drive very comfortable, but I had difficulty with the heat once I left the cool environment, where as driving without it, you become acclimatised. For what it's worth that's my opinion, but what do i know?:D:D

Just looking for peoples experiences and views. It wont be held aginst you.

Driving might not be so bad I guess if you have windows open and air moving through the MH.

What about at night?? Was it uncomfortably warm without aircon in the MH whilst you were sleeping? Or did you use it at night?

    Hi Kol,
In my experience I've found that the hotter the climate, the the cooler the nights, except in the case where the humidity is high,in that situation I find it better to sleep outside, so I suppose air conditioning would be good in that case.I also found that when It's very hot during the day, woolen rugs over the windscreen and skylights draw the heat sufficiently to use the van, should you need a snooze or some such thing. Hope this is of some use,but remember if you are going to very hot clime's you need to adapt. Take it handy................boyoh;):)

Kol, re' "what do I know" This is just a saying I use sometimes to denote that my my experience or opinion is not Gospel or is right for everyone. It's meant to be humorous, and take the "know all" element out of what I'm saying and at the same time hoping the advise is helpful, hope this doesn't muddy the waters further. ;):D

I have it in the cab and find it great.

Don't have it in the hab space. Sometimes I wish I did but then, if it's a hot day what would I be doing sitting inside the motorhome??? just sit out in the shade with a cold drink/facecloth/whatever.

There were one or two really hot nights where I was uncomfortable in the van but I am going to rectify that by getting a small fan that goes from side-to-side for each sleeping area.

You can also get built in fans in the roof vents.

Got one in the roof vent over the pull down bed in the cab and you can set it to either push hot air out or suck fresh air in. If it's not too hot outside that works a treat.

    See example:

I was thinking about one of those or some sort of fan. I'm going to a motorhome accesory dealer in a while to have a look around and see whats available. It's mainly the night time I am thinking about.

No need to explain, I understand. Thanks for the info though. Much appreciated.

Saw one of those fans yesterday, they were only €39. Could be an option.

Sounds pretty reasonable - Has anybody here used one ?
BTW - Where did you see it for that price ?

I saw it in Italy yesterday. Loads of stuff I could get if I had room in my luggage. Got lots anyway that you wouldn't get here in a walk in shop. They had lts of fiamma/truma/dometic/waeco spares, electrical spares, water spares etc etc etc
