Automatic Honda, NO DRIVE!

    Hello all,

I have a Honda Stream 1.7 petrol which has an auto box. Was driving fine till Sunday afternoon. After about 20 miles the box seamed to hang on to the gear a little longer that usual and then change up so I kept on my way untill it lost all drive both forward and reverse.

I checked the oil in the gear box and it was fine not below the mark on the dip stick, and there was no big bang or anything, it just stopped working. The engine its self is fine, so any ideas as a recon for the box will be over 2 grand!!. Its park up at a garage now and speaking to them today they said it drove in third gear, so would it be worth doing an oil change and gearbox filter?

    Any info would be great!

    Thanks

How did the ATF look/smell? I'd start off with a fluid & filter change anyway, on the basis that it's cheap and it might sort you out.

An Anan1 said, it may be something simple. It could also be something with the electronics (or computer) a glitch etc. So I wouldn't start thinking of new gearboxes or the like just yet. What I would say is be careful who you let near it as most mechanics are not up to the job of doing major work (if required) with an auto gearbox. Definitely a job for a specialist only.

From experience of autos down the years when they go wrong in a big way, they normal lose gears bit by bit rather than all at once. Reminds me of the time reverse went (only) which was fixed (allegedly) by a main dealer, only for all forwards gears to pack up the following week. I had fun in that car, like when the computer decided to hold the car in a high gear at a set of traffic lights (with high engine idle) and I had to stand on the brakes and it was still moving forwards. Like a dog straining at the leash. Had to switch off the engine as it was going through said lights if I didn't. When I switched the car on again it was off like speedy gonzalez. Bloody Renaults.

Sounds like fun tommy! I think i'll change the ATF and filter, would a honda stream filter be handy to comeby?

Pretty sure there's no transmission fluid filter in that car. Use only Honda ATF.
