rent supplement & housing list

    Hi,

    Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else... I will shortly be made redundant and someone said that in order to get rent supplement I have to go on the housing list first.

    I assume they meant a list for those waiting on a council house. I don't really understand it as I am currently renting privately and don't necessarily need the council to provide accomodation.

    I'm not sure if this is just a Galway thing or not. The person who told me just said it was a new thing they brought in recently. Does anyone have any info on this? I can't find anything on welfare.ie or citizensinformation.ie.

    yeah u need to be on a housing list to get rent allowance. when you are applying for rent allowance you need to get the housing dept in the county council to fill out part of your form stating that you are on a housing list and therefore in need of a house. They basically give the social welfare officer permission to give you rent allowance.

    I was caught on this one too but I got the form for council housing on a monday filled in it got the job to fill in their part, got the housing dept to fill in their part and got it stamped in the tax office and brought it back up the social welfare the same day and was approved for rent allowance and was in my apartment that thursday!
