I'm doing an oil change at the weekend on the A4, was thinking of getting a can of engine flush. I normally just drain the old oil for a while and then replace with new stuff. Are these engine flushes any good or are they just a waste of money?

Ive heard they destroy seals, but thats just hear say, never used them myself, dont see the need.

After 5 or 6 oil changes I use an engine flush. Don't notice any major benifits to it tho.

If you haven't serviced the car in a while or the car doesn't get a chance to warm up (5 minute runs etc) then I'd use it, as the oil would be like treacle nearly.

Regular serviced, well run motors shouldn't need it.

Specifically designed engine flushes can cause problems especially on high mileage vehicles ie cause oil leaks at seals & gaskests and induce an engine to burn oil.

If your eng. oil & filter are changed within or even better before the service schedule all should be ok. Drain engine oil when hot, best after car has been driven which will allow the oil temp. to be at normal operating temp.

Going down the flushing route I'd advise using ATF (automatic transmission fluid). Drop the old oil when hot, refill with ATF and let engine idle for 20mins with the odd rev. to 2000, no more. Then refill with fresh eng. oil & change filter.

Thanks folks. Car is at 70k miles and has been regularly serviced, with decent VAG approved oil (at least since I've had it), and was dealer serviced before I owned it so I assume they used decent oil also. Haven't seen any sludging.

Think I'll do without the flush so.
