What have you done so far? How many firms have you inquired to? Do you have prior experience? A degree?

I have a degree in Personnel Magagement and and just writting my MBA dissertation. I have sales (Guiness) , project management and accounts payable/recievable work experience from a multinational company(Willbros group) and have this interest in accounting. I will be sitting for my ACCA in December and have already applied with 3 confirmed exemptions (F1-F3) and 2 exemptions awaiting confirmation(F4 and F5).
I would like to gain more experience in accounting to enable me get a hands-on application on what i learn during my ACCA.

How many CV's have you sent out

At this stage i have honestly lost count.
I got the ACCA graduate Ireland handbook (holds a list of A-Z companies in Ireland that might be hiring ) and applied to companies there but it seems no one is hiring. I use all the contacts i have like friends, anything, anyone...but still nothing. I read this book "what colour is your parachute" by Richard Nelson Bolles and have got a lot of encouragement in dealing with the rejection.
I am determined and will keep at it till i find someone who is.
I really need the experience under my belt.
    Thanks

    hi ice age

How long have you been looking? I was nearly 6 months out of college before I got work so be patient. I got job covering receptionist maternity leave in accountants & now they keeping me on as trainee :)

Its not a good time to be looking but just keep sending out cvs and try follow them up. The firm I work for gets at least 4 cvs a week and its a smallish place in the south west so you can imagine how many the bigger firms in the city get.

Revise your cv, try do courses that will make your cv look better than the others and keep positive. Try the phone book or internet search for other companies not on ACCA website.

Just a query from accountants/ trainees working in the industry.
To what extenet, prior to the recession, did small firms advertise training graduate positions. Most of the graduate positions advertised all seem to be mediums to large... I'm just curious...

Apply directly to whichever of these takes your fancy, or all, and follow up:

    http://www.icai.ie/en/General/About-Us/Chartered-Accountancy/Becoming-a-CA/Training-Vacancies/

Even though it's ICAI, the firms shouldn't have any issues if you want to study ACCA.

When I was applying about 5 years ago, there were newspaper advertisements for trainee positions in small & medium firms in local and national papers. Many small firms don't advertise and just contact whoever has applied directly. Some do advertise and carefully pick the best candidate. It's largely reflective of the partners in the firm. Be careful and judge who's interviewing you. You'll be working for them for 3 and a half years. Many trainees hate their bosses.
