Where are you getting the error? Never tried RS on Res, but it usually works on campus.

    If your using an accelerator-
    proxy.dcu.ie
    port no: 8080

If you are having problems just downloading via your browser then i'm afraid even I can't help you.

I'm currently using Internet Download manager at home but it isnt working for me here on campus. Should I change my settings to yours there?
Currently getting timeouts when I try to dl.

Yeah you'll have to change the connection settings as DCU use a proxy. See above.

Ive been having problems with Flashget recently and have just been using Rapidshares Download Manager.

Thanks a million, working fine now. Thought the proxy only applied to the laplan net and not the accom net. Getting great speeds here now.

Same, they must be blocking it.

Anyone try it in the library?

Right, thought I had done something to mess up the settings. Wasn't working in the library earlier either. Can't get onto rapidshare.com unless through "hidemyass".

I didn't think they could just block sites like that? I mean P2P is ok cos its not a website just a port. I might have words with them if its like this again next year.

Wouldnt count on them being too receptive, I was up with my playstation a few times throughout the year trying to get it sorted for my room but to no avail, xbox live works fine so cant understand why they couldnt do it. Was looking forward to availing of the good speeds before I left too.

Well seeing as the overwhelming majority of rapidshare use is for downloading warez, it makes sense that they blocked it.

Actually its where I have all my data files stored as I couldnt afford to have all of them on my laptop incase it was stolen or damaged. SO this has caused my no end of hassle. Luckily its at the end of year and I have no assignments to do.

I will look over the terms and conditions after the exams but as far as I am aware we are entitled to full internet access. And Rapidshare is fully legal so I doubt they are within their rights to block it. If it was using too much bandwidth then by all means restrict it, but a full out ban with no warning is ridiculous.

There are plenty of free alternitives to host files, such as DropBox. If you need more than 2gb of storage, you could spend the money you spent on a rapidshare account on a portable external hard drive.

Yea! You show them who decides the rules of the network! Ya legend!

Fair point, but a few of us in different universities share data and this is why we need remote storage.

Thanks for the vote of confidence but I wont be telling them anything. I will merely inquire as to why they have blocked rapidshare (if they have) and see if there is any way to rectify the situation.

Here is a list of the terms (see last line):
    Campus Residences - copyright regulation
Occupants and/or their guests are expressly forbidden from engaging in any activity, which infringes copyright.

Infringements include (but are not limited to) the following :-

Copying physical media e.g. CD, DVD, video & audio tapes in breach of copyright
Storing material (either electronically or otherwise) in breach of copyright
Publishing or transmitting material or making it available to others by any sharing/publishing mechanism - electronic or otherwise - in breach of copyright
The attention of occupiers' is drawn to the various Irish and international copyright legislation and regulations.

Breach of the above will be considered as "gross misconduct" and may lead to disciplinary action being taken.

    Campus Residences - networking regulation
Occupants and/or their guests are not permitted to :-

build or operate data, voice or other networks / communications links
run servers (or services on workstations/devices) which interfere in any way with campus systems
in the vicinity of the campus(es) [ii] the residences buildings without the express permission of the Director of information systems & services, DCU.

Occupiers must not operate electromechanical or other equipment, which might interfere with existing wireless, wired or other networks.

The prohibited network technologies include (but are not limited to) the following :-

    RF (including unlicensed frequency spectrum)
    Wireless Optical
    Microwave
    Laser
    Wired (voice)
Wired (data) eg Hubs, Switches, Routers etc
    Bluetooth
    Infrared
    GSM
    GPRS
    3G
    WLAN
    Wireless Access Points
    Cable
The prohibited servers (or services on workstations/devices) include (but are not limited to) the following :-

    Mailservers
    Open-mail-relays
    Routing services
    RAS/VPN servers
    DHCP or BOOTP servers
    Proxy servers
File-sharing, streaming, broadcasting or any form of electronic publishing directly from workstation(s) or other technologies owned by or operated by occupants in the residences is expressly forbidden.

It is expressly forbidden for any device connected to the campus network also to be connected to any other wired or wireless network.

Normal use of standard consumer devices such as mobile phones, PDAs (including IR / Bluetooth syncing with PCs) is permitted as is the operation of IR / Bluetooth remote controls for TVs and other devices. Use of mobile phone technology (GSM, GPRS, 3G) for data communications with devices, which are not connected to the campus network, is permitted. The voice lines in the residences are "digital" not "analogue". Faxes and modems will not work with these lines.

It is forbidden to assign static IP addresses to computers.

The attention of occupiers is drawn to the various wireless, telegraphy and communications legislation enacted by EU, Oireachtas Eireann and to regulations issued from time-to-time by the Commission for Communications Regulation.

information systems & services reserves the right to use utilities and methods to secure the integrity and reputation of the University and its IT resources. Furthermore ISS may issue amended regulations if it is deemed to be in the best interests of the University.

Well, it appears that rapidshare has been unblocked, so the discussion is now moot.

Yeah awesome. Although looking at the last line of the terms it looks like they could block it again anytime they wish.

If you just send them off an e-mail telling them what ports need unblocking and telling them it's for the PSN, then they usually get it done... eventually.

Try Windows Live Skydrive. 25GB of storage space. :)
