    Hi all,

I've been getting calls from The Golden Pages over the last while about advertising in their printed directory..they're also including online in their offer but I was wondering:

    1) Does anyone use the Golden Pages Directory anymore or has it simply been supplanted by online search i.e Google.
    2) What about an ad on their website...does the site get much traffic and are people clicking on ads/listings/links on the Golden Pages website??

    Thanks!!

    K

Depends on your business OP - I would say if it's service based like sweeping chimneys then yes. However if its specialised B2B work, e.g. software development then no. Speaking from experience I have gotten zero leads from the golden pages over the years except people annoying me with questions like "do you sell microsoft word"? For the extortionate rates charged by Golden Pages there are far better ways to spend your money IMHO.

Golden Pages still right for non-it literate public, and there are still lots of them about. And for many people GP is faster than the web because searching the book takes less time than starting up a computer.

However, b2b would be less relevant, not just the tech services side.

I have to say I use the golden pages the whole time, but thats a B2B sales tool. They have actually been onto me recently as well. Didnt feel it would be benificial to the service my company offers. we would target large 1k to 50k accounts so really dont believe a procurement mgr would source companys they'll be engaging for large contracts out of the golden pages.

Then if your in say the retail or domestic services sector, I have to say for the money think it may actually provide sufficient leads. plus ask questions like how many unique hits they get per week? Divide that by the amount your paying and that'll give you a price per individual POTENTIAL lead then you can ask yourself is it really worth it??

You need to start asking your customers where they heard about you. people dump money into advertising without knowing if its the right advertising for theyre product/service. When a little bit of research and information gathering would set you in the right direction.

You'll often see the Golden Pages advertise on Google for their listings e.g. if you search for solicitors, the GoldenPages.ie/Solicitors is one of the top few ads.

Have you though of cutting out the middle man and advertising on Google yourself?

I think it might be useful to some offline businesses with not very high turnovers.
