I'm in Drimnagh and would like to place half a metal drum on some breeze blocks at the back of my shed to have a diy BBQ.

Can anyone think of where to get hold of a metal drum?

not as fancy pants as these - but this kind of metal drum.

    thanks for any ideas.

I have some in walkinstown, but ul need to cut it in half and spot weld the top in place.

    Thanks for offer PS.

I'm looking to make it as simple as possible.
I can borrow a grinder from someone to cut the drum in half but I don't have any gear- know how around welding.

I was thinking of a closed top drum (no welding needed).

but actually - looking into it more I don't think I'll be able to get one without having to weld it - so I guess that's that idea done with.

Any mechanic friends you have will more than likely beable to weld it. Its not a hard job its just the fact of having the tools to do it.

If u change ur mind just pm me, ive always have them lying around.

    nay welding needed!
Just buy two hinges, brass or stainless and drill the holes and bolt on the hinges

    Sorted.

    Decent offer there Pirate....oooh AARrrr!

Or if u wanted i could screw the lid in place for you. You just need to cut it in half and give the inside a good clean, but a nice fire in side it will do that for you.

if you can get hold of a beer keg it does a better job as its lighter and yu dont need 20 euro of charcoal to fill it.;)

A couple of steel butt hinges and some over-size pop rivets would do a good job on the hinged top too!

    thanks all!

Someone here at work suggested a beer keg too - much lighter and easier to clean and less charcoal needed to get decent heat going.

Think that's the way I'll go.

when it's finished I'll post photo up.

Anyone made their own bbq instead of buying one?

Never bothered making my own to be honest, I just buy the cheapies from Aldi/ Lidl when they're on sale, when they burn out just chuck them. I do think the BBQ barrel is good idea though. Good luck with it.

friend of mine made one from a beer keg.

cut it in half bolted on some big hinges and feet. and got a big grill for it.

TBH they are cheap as chips to buy in B&Q

    Hi Folks.

I know this thread is a few months old, but we're still in bbq season, I think ....

Did anyone have any success with locating barrels and building a barrel bbq? ...or locating a beer keg!

I hope to have a garden party next week (weather permitting of course!)

I am planning to do a bbq, but I would love to have a proper man made bbq.....instead of a load of disposables or buying a brand new gas one.

So if anyone did make one, maybe they could point out some do's and don'ts.

Or perhaps if anyone made one and feels like earning a few quid back on it, then perhaps renting it for a day or two .

    Any info greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance Folks.

My dad built one and it was a great job. He would throw huge bbq parties and kept enough food on it to feed an army. When the grub was finished he used to throw sticks into it and use it as an alfresco heater.

They are simple to make - unfortunately the old mans wore out and he bought a gas one.

As the above posters say get a mate or yourself with the right tools and you'll knock one up in no time.
