Made my Monday morning mistake and drove right past the petrol station. I was a quarter mile from the next one when she conked. I returned a while ago with my 5l can and she won't restart.

The day I bought the car 2 years ago I basically drove round the corner and it ran out of fuel (thank you miserly seller:rolleyes:) and it restarted after a few tries.

What's the make and model? I though all cars were self-priming, but this sounds like it needs manual.

Is the car on level ground? Even a slight incline could mean that 5l wouldn't be enough. Also, did you leave the ignition on for a few seconds before trying to start? This will allow the fuel pump to prime the system. If that doesn't work, i'd add another 5l before panicking.

Also, are you 100% sure it's petrol you put into it and not diesel??? Was the can empty before you started filling it at the pump???

    It's a 98 A6 2.8.

It didn't need priming last time though. I'll get another can of petrol.

+1, even on level ground 5l may not be enough to get up to the level of the fuel outlet on some cars.

    +1 on the above

Leave the ignition on for a few seconds before you start it, see does it bring petrol back into the pump.

It's level and I've put in a total of 10L now and still nothing. Come to think of it, I would expect to get another 10-20 miles before it would conk. Also, the fuel pump has been getting groany lately so I think the low level is just a co-incidence.

Whether or which, the tow truck is coming...

Pity, more things to add to that list of yours. Hope it's nothing major.

Was this on the M6 this morning? I came across a car near one of the exits at 9.30 with the petrol cap open and looked to be lifting a petrol can from the boot. Hope it all works out for ya.
