    Hi,
Brought my computer back from U.S. - should I buy a step-down transformer to plug in or should I be o.k. with just a plug adaptor? It's an older Dell model ( about 5 years old )

    Thanks,
    Emmet.

Is there a switch on the back of the powersupply (near where the power plugs in) it should be labelled 110. You should be able to switch this to 220V, then just buy a new power cable (or use an adapter, same thing) and it will work fine.

A switch like the one below

Some power supplies won't have that switch, they are (usually) autoswitching, it should say.

I've never come across a power supply that didn't take both 110 and 230V

That's fair enough, but to the OP if it doesn't have that switch check with the PSU manufacturer before assuming it can take 230V.

I brought a 1996 PC with me to Ireland and that even had the Voltage switch. I honestly don't think you can find a PSU without one.
