    Hi,
I brought in a wii from the U.S... Got adaptor from Argos which works with all my other u.s. stuff (Laptop, hair straightner, baby monitor, etc).

I plugged in Wii and the power light came on and then transformer started to smoke... Plugged out straight away and from researching (here on boards and on web) I obviously needed a step-down transformer (which I thought I had).

I got a U.K. wii power source from Amazon.co.uk which is what someone else did and it worked

My question is this - because I have fried the U.S. power source have I fried the console totally?

    Thanks,
    Emmet.

I'd say the console is fine.

Dealextreme.com have power supplies for cheap, but you'll be waiting a few weeks for it.

Does the wii have a universal power adapter though? I don't think it does. If you used a UK power adapter on a US Wii, you probably fried the something on the wii, more than likely the power unit in the wii itself. You really should have used a step down converter.

No matter where you are in the world the power going into the wii at the power connector is 12V. The problem was the transformer on the power cable was expecting 110v and received 220v and fried, just hopefully it didn't pass it onto the wii :/

The reason all your other stuff worked is that almost all devices that have a step down transformer (laptops, mobile phone chargers, external hard drive, Ipod chargers etc) will except an input of 110 or 220V, but neither the wii or the DS support this. (Look on the transformer for "input:" on your laptop it will say 100 -240V, while your wii says 110V)

So an Irish power adapter will work fine on a american wii over here, as its taking our 240V and converting it to 12V.
