Beginning the Football Championship

So the Championship began today with a whimper with Mayo V New York . I'm not really slagging off the teams now or anything i'm talking more about the promotion of the Championship etc. A very low key start anyway.

What i would have liked to have seen doesn't involve a hugh change but just to postpone the begining of the championship until the 24th of may for all the earlier matches. Therefore todays game would of been on in two weeks along with the carlow v louth game and the Down v fermanagh game.

    Why do this?

Well the championship would kick off with a load of counties playing in every province, with some really high profile matches (tyrone v armagh & Derry V Monaghan). This coupled with a proper promotion would really kick off the Championship.

What are your thoughts on this?

They should certainly kick it off with a big game, but there is no need to hold over until May 24th. There is no reason why it couldn't have been last Sunday. There are plenty of juicy first round ties that could have been used to launch the championship, like they used the Dublin v Tyrone game for the league opener.

As a regular here Dapos, you'll know that this issue has been mentioned before. With a bit more push and imagination, they could get more people to fill the many empty seats we see at matches in the league and earlier stages of the championship. With a few notable exceptions, we won't really start getting the crowds in until late June and into July.

All the ideas have been suggested here before, like giving tickets to school children or to foreign students here during the summer or to general tourists. Occasionally you will meet a tourist at a match, but they've normally heard of a match going on from a friend, or by seeing a gathering crowd and asking what was going on, but not through the tourist agencies or their accommodation.

Ya definatly agree with the promotion aspect. They should really push to get schools at these matchs all around the country, not just in croker.

I still think it would be a good idea to start a load of matchs over one weekend along with a hugh promotion drive across the country. Also with more channels showing GAA matchs now, they should be able to show the juicier games.
