It's a great car, well worth getting one if you like that style of machine.

The important thing to remember is these cars is they were built to a high
standard, and you have to maintain them in this fashion.
A lot of 944's in particular have fallen by the wayside because of people
who bought them because they were cheap and failed to service and
    maintain them properly.

That said, they are one of the best handling, balance and rewarding cars
to drive, especially on the track, one of the purest drivers cars out there!

    I have a 1987 944 Turbo myself, and I don't think I'll ever part with it!

First off, go to www.porscheclubgbforum.co.uk, one of the most active
944 forums on the interweb is there and it is free to join.

If you want a quick idea on maintaince and everyday running,
Clark's Garage is a fantastic resource.

If you want more power I have found Lindsey Racing very good,
I've bought all my suspension and various other bits from them.
A lot of the English guys go to Vitesse Racing, I have no experiance
with them but they come highly, highly recommended.
Lindsey are more the model of "here's the parts, you fit them", whereas
Vitesse you can just drop in the car and say what you want.

Of the more powerful 944's, there are 2 in consideration:
    944 Turbo, 2.5L 8V Turbo (circa 220 - 250bhp, depending on spec)
    944 S2, 3.0L 16V NA (circa 220bhp)

The turbo is by far the faster, as it has substantially more torque.
It is the more challenging drive however, the boost comes in around
3000rpm hard and fast, these cars don't have traction control so
if you are not aware of this it could end up being an expensive lesson.

Also, as regards modifying, the turbo is a far better starting point.
It has a far stronger gearbox, and there's a lot of potential in the motor,
there's a few guys in England regularly getting over 400bhp on the rolling
roads with an absolutely psychotic torque numbers.
One guy with a 3.2 is getting over 470lbs/ft, that's almost as much
    as a Ferrari Enzo!

Just keep in mind, yes, these power figures are attainable, but you need
to have the wallet to back them up.
It comes down to how much are you willing to spend.....
