Broken dipstick tube

My father was checking the oil level on his Citroen Dispatch van this evening. He attempted to extract the dipstick using it's handle, but instead of just the dipstick coming up the whole tube that it goes into came away in his hands. Looks like the tube broke off where it enters the engine block (along with the supporting arm).

My opinion is that he needs this to be fixed before undertaking any long journeys. Anyone else any experience of this and how easy/expensive it is to fix?

    Thanks

Will it not just slide back in?

Slide back in to what? The metal tube/pipe/housing that the dipstick goes into to reach the engine block has broke off. The only way I think it will go back on will be with a weld.

Although I know nothing about engines, so thought I get some advice here.
