Google Books can be a pain in the arse for that sort of thing alright. Maybe try this site, it's a free register and you might get lucky, I used it for my thesis: http://www.netlibrary.com, or maybe try looking for a pdf of the books you think may have what you're looking for then just do a search within the text. JSTOR is pretty good for scholary articles too. If you don't have access to it I'd be happy to download them and mail them to you.
