can anyone help, I'm looking for shrubs to put down in a border next to a fence in order to stop a dog getting through.

I only need something small max 2ft high and that wont spread like mad.

    Any ideas??

chicken wire, then you can plant what you like, a few types of clematis will hide it, just make sure that they are not vigirous.

You want something thorny that stays small. If you're willing to do a lot of pruning, you have lots of options - you'll just have to keep them hacked back. If you want something low maintenance, you'll have some trouble achieving dog-proof density or thorniness in just two feet of height. (Must be a v. small dog?!)

Rose bushes would be an option - carpet roses don't get huge, but as with all roses they DO benefit from being cut back once a year, which will interfere with your efforts at creating a barrier.

Otherwise you could just use chickenwire and then plant a box hedge to hide it...
