RTE Player and TCD Proxies

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone is having any trouble with the new RTE Player when they are connected to the college network and using the Proxies, either TCD proxies or the CS Proxies.

The Player works fine for me at home when not using any proxies but when I come in here, I can't get past the adverts and on to the actual vid I want to watch.

Any one encounter this before or even have a solution?

Were you using firefox? I find that rte player acts the bollox when I use firefox, even at home.

Yeah was using Firefox 3.0.10 on a Mac os x 10.5...
It works great outside the TCD network without using the proxies but when I have to switch to the proxies...nothing works...
Might try Safari and see how that goes.

Yeah tried Safari but still no joy.
What actually happens: The adverts play fine but when they are finished the content in the flash player should change but in both browsers all I get is that spinning "loading" wheel and just keeps spinning endlessly.

I was using a Cisco VPN and just turned that off to make sure it wasnt causing any trouble (although it shouldnt) and I get the same problem.

I'll have a look at the Firefox logs and if anything pops up int it I'll pop them up here.

I think it's a problem that has always existed when trying to watch embedded videos on any website. I know youtube works, but I mean other websites where they have videos embedded on the page.... I never got them to work. The only way I got it to work was to open it in Windows Media Player.... but I don't know if you can do that with the Rte Player..

So in my quest to get the RTE Player to work behind the TCD Firewall and Proxies, I emailed RTE Tech Support and got a very quick reply. This is what they sent me:
Thanks for contacting RTÉ player with your query.

The problems you are experiencing could relate to your network requirements which should be cross-checked for the following:

    Web Browser

A web browser that has the latest Flash plug-in.

    Internet Connection

You need a connection of at least 1Mbps download speed. If your network connection is not consistent, you may experience problems connecting – the video will pause and a circle will spin on your screen.

    Network Traffic

Check that your connection is not being shared with others that may be downloading or uploading files. Network traffic may also build at certain types of day, so you may wish to try later.

    Wifi/3G

If you’re accessing the service through a wifi connection or over a 3G network, we advise you to contact your wireless/3G provider to find out what levels of service they can offer you. Depending on what area of the country you are in, your 3G connection may be limited to 384Kbps or less, which is not sufficient to use the RTÉ player effectively.

    Proxy/Firewall

If the ad plays, but not the programme – this may be a proxy/firewall issue.

If your computer is behind a corporate firewall you should contact your network administrator. Corporate network administrators should enable access to the RTMP protocol.

We hope this resolves your issue and you enjoy using the RTÉ player.

    Regards,

    The RTÉ player Team

    www.rte.ie/player

So I think its the problem with the streaming of the content from RTE's servers. As its a real time stream rather then being downloaded, additional configurations may be needed for the College proxies and Firewall...To get this changed with ISServices will be a complete disaster because I have tried to get things changed for academic purposes before but to no availe.
I have however emailed the CS Dept Tech Support about the issue and I hope to have some results in the next few days. They usually are very helpfull.

RTE have modified their Flash server and the RTE Player now works with the TCD proxy servers.

Thanks for the heads-up. Unfortunately I now foresee several hours of my productivity in the near future being lost to "Mad Men".

I'm still having problems accessing iplayer. Using tcdproxy.tcd.ie and ubuntu. People using macs seem to be having same problem with flash ignoring proxy settings. Any solutions other than IS services changing the proxy system?

Can't remember how TCD proxy was set up. Is it in browser settings or system settings the proxy info?

You could try the foxyproxy video utility for mac.

This should force flash to take the proxy.
But really it will only be the same I think as changing the system proxy settings in system preferences.
