DIY Cheap foxing lamp using a car spot lamp.

I had a pair of 50 watt Hella FF 50 car spot lamps and being a tight old sod I made a foxing lamping out of one of them. This is good for 150m as is but the range can be extended by fitting a 50 watt H7 lamp that gives out 80% more light - get them off E bay or Halfords.

This lamp is used to take that final shot. We locate the fox first by scaning and sweeping the fields using a Lightforce 170 with dimmer.

Photo shows a shade fitted to stop the light flooding out side ways.
I use the top of a trafic cone shapped with a paint stripper heatgun.

    1. Get a length of 12mm x 4mm bar from B&Q and file the sides at a 60 degree angle to fit in the 11mm mount. Drill out a 1/4" hole for the lamp bracket bolt. About 2 1/2" long or whatever.

I used a 30mm med. Sportsmatch mount that was in the odds box.

    and your electrical connections?

    candle power only ;););)

It will come down to the front left hand side of the stock as with any scope mounted lamp into the switch then onto a 7 AH battery. I'll replace it with a dimmer and curly cable from opticswarehouse soon.

Tasty job , would a laptop battery be an idea if you just use it for the final aim ? Just a few more volts would give you much whiter light ( early grave for the bulb though )

First fox for my CZ varmint. One shot one kill.
Out last night for the first time last night for a bit of lamping with my CZ varmint that I got last November. Got one in the first field we lamped - a small fox, ranged @140y. Don't know if it was a dog or vixen as I had shot the belly of it, a lot of bits hanging out.

i had spent a good few hours sorting out new cigar plugs and sockets for the lamps and batteries, got off e bay, only to have the lightforce 170,100 watt, melt within 15 mins. and the car spot light, H7 55 watts, melt and give up after 25 mins. So it's back to the drawing board.

The car spot light worked out well enough that I'll get a H7 55w bulb that gives out 80% more light for it. And I have just ordered a dimmer switch and curly cable from opticswarehouse for this lamp set up.

What melted? The lights or the Plugs/wiring?

The cheap cigar plugs I got off e bay, so I have got better plugs and sockets today.

The 170 is faultless and the car spot light on the scope was perfect for lighting up the fox for the final shot.

Clivej did you try a fuse in line on the cable it will blow before damaging the more expensive parts. Just a taught.

Clive I was wondering what all the burnt cable was doing hanging out of your bag.:o

Hi Mick how did you do on the fox shoot?

Yes I have a 20amp inline fuse on the cable and tested it out for 20min. and all is OK now:D

Depending on what type of car your driving.. Anderson plugs could be a good idea there stronger than a cigar lighter... we use them on landrover defenders for jump starting as the battery is a pig under the seat.. very simply done run earth and live cable from battery to desired place in car and put an inline fuse in even put a switch in if so desired. Then have the other connection on your light you could even put a switch in if so desired..
