A Garda and another man died in a two-car crash near Belmullet in Co Mayo shortly before 6am this morning.

Two gardaí were travelling in one of the cars while on their way to work.

One of the officers has since died from his injuries while a man in the second car was also fatally injured.

A second Garda is being treated at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

A section of the Belmullet to Ballina Road has been closed for examination.

As a matter of protocol, the Garda Ombudsman Commission has launched an investigation and a representative from the Commission is expected to attend the scene later.

May the Garda and the other man killed rest in peace. Also, here's hoping the other Garda makes a speedy recovery.

My thoughts go out to the families, friends and colleagues of all involved in this tragedy.

I wish that people would just take it handy & be more aware of their actions on the roads, the rules are there for a reason and no-body is above the law!

It was a terrible thing to happen. Terence was a well respected and quite cheery man who loved his local area and done his best for it. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
