    Hi,

Lads I looking for a dog to act as a pet for my 3 year old son, he has an ASD and his team reckon a pet dog would help him a lot. Now, not being a dog man I'm not sure what type of dog would suit, but I thought a spaniel of some sorts would be playful and would put up with the children's usual antics. Would I be right on this ??

    Thanks ,

    FS.

Still want to know if a spaniel would be the right type of dog for kids and theres no better place to find spaniel owners.

i dont think so FS there a lively dog and are programed to hunt.

i too would look to the local pound for a pup or a youngish dog ,some of the cross breads make wonderful companions.

i would go for a bitch and if your getting her from the pound they will neuter it for you

yep as an owner of collies i can vouch that there is no bad dog just bad owners and collies make extremely good pets.......very good with kids.........very very clever so easy to house train etc etc......but must never be tied up or locked up in a shed or left to wander just like any other dog.

If you cant house them or have the correct facilities to look after them then get your kid a rabbit or something

thats a lovely looking pup FS ,you are doing a great thing by taking a pup from a pound and giving it a loving home.

the irish are the worst for not looking after our dogs ,we put down more dogs than england every year.

in the north of ireland last year almost 4,000 dogs were put down.just under 8,000 in the uk.

    hi F.S
have you considered a golden retriever best dogs ever for kids i have a 3 year old dog and hes big but so gentle and most days he has 5 kids hanging off him all the research i done on the breed recomends them for all sorts of jobs. www.irishdogs.ie sometimes you get good dogs looking to be rehomed

thanks SOTG, was thinking the retriever was a bit big and can't seem to find one that needs housing which may suit.

for a family dog the golden retriever is just ideal im a big fan of them. But i any of the non hunting spaniel breeds like the king charles or cocker may good kids pets but any dog when brought up in a family home and tought manners early will make a nice pet no such thing as a bad dog just bad owners

the collie is a good choice. not over hyper, very good with children, kids can pull and hang out of them and they will just carry on as if nothing has happened. my nephew has ADHD! my uncle got a pup from the pound for him, they are always together, playin and chasing each other, the dog really helps him.its his best friend!

OK it seems that to adapt a dog from Dogs in Destress the dog must live in house with the family, Where do you guys stand on the dog living in house full time ???

Do not really like the idea,I have a Lab and Springer in the pen,my wife has a beautiful Whippet, who stays out when were at work during the day and comes in for the evening, and for rhe winter stays in,cold skinney creatures, but a magnificent funny loyal pet.

Well I did inform them I would be providing a large pen and run, but their policy is for the dog to be a house dog.

Nothing wrong with it, when your dog is house trained (just like your kid) your dog will probably behave far better.

When your dog is washed reguarly your dog (just like you) wont stink also the dog will do a fair bit for themselves.

Your dog will be a deterrent for unwanted visitors to your house.

Your dog may shed hair and f.a.r.t but then so do you but maybe not to the same extent but who knows:)

Your dog may have strange habits like licking herself when visitors call, but then........ :)

Hair and carpets can be a problem.

If the dog you are adopting has been a house dog it COULD NOT be then housed outside that is probably why they are stating this to be a house dog only, it would be like you sleeping in your room then being banged up in a shed........besides i think if you have a dog as a pet this way, the dog is and will behave as part of your family.......like i said before........no such thing as a bad dog just bad owners.

Too many people think they just get a dog take it out of the box and say "go" and the dog can do exactly what is required.......dogs like people need to be trained and that DOESNOT mean by sticking a collar on it and electrocuting it everytime it goes wrong.

I've been researching it a bit further and We are looking to speak to the Irish guide dogs, as they can provide dogs for autistic children, about the needs of my son and what a properly trained dog in relation to his special needs could provide.

We have considered the need for our son to have very close interaction with the dog and for the dog to live as a part of the family as opposed to being a pet therefore WE the family and not just the dog need training and to be able to adjust our view of this dog and it role and position in the family.

i couldn't agree more!! fodda is spot on with what he has just said!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 947 ✭✭✭fodda

Well out of all the dogs it is recognised that collies are the most intelligent and loyal.

The collie you picked out would be just as suitable as any dog an organisation like the blind dog people will provide who may even supply you with a collie??

But i do take my hat off to you for seeking advice not just from here but from others and professionals on how to treat and look after an animal/pet/companion/family member........something everybody who looks for same should do........good luck:)

Technically, this whole thread is in breach of the forum Charter:
Pets and other domestic/domesticated livestock (horses, cattle, etc) are also prohibited.
...but, in this particular case (long-term regular member, looking for advice from the community for a very specific purpose), we've let it slide.

    MOD WARNING FOR THE FUTURE:
Anyone reading this thread in the future and pointing at it as a justification for posting something similar, should note the this thread is very much an exception, all future 'Pet' threads should really go in Animals & Pet Issues.

Oh, and good luck in your quest for a companion animal for your son, it sounds like a tremendous idea.
