Hi, just want a bit of help here.(Don't know if its the correct forum).

I'm about to finish my third year in a neuroscience degree. I would like to go on to do a postgrad in either Speech and Language Therapy of Psychiatry.

I see that UL offer a Masters in Speech and Language, but I can't seem to find anything on Psychiatry.

Does such a masters course exist?
And, if so, what are the prerequisites for it?

    Thanks

do you mean that you would like to be a psychiatrist?

if so, the only way to go about that is by first doing a medical degree, then doing basic specialist training in psychiatry (minimum 3 years), and passing the Royal College of Psychiatrists membership exams.

AFAIK, in some centres in england (Institute of psychiatry, i think ) you can do an MSc in psychiatry, but i'm not sure what that qualifies you as, you def wouldnt be a psychiatrist after it.

i dont know of any place in ireland where you can do a similar MSc.

Do you mean Psychology? there would be Clinical Psychologists who specialise in neuropsychology, but it's a long training and places difficult to get. You'd have to do the post grad dip in psychology, then the 3 yr doctorate in Clin Psych. See the Psychology forum.

    Hi there Froosh69,

I understand your question. There is not specific postgrad course in SLT in Psychiatry, just a general MSc. in Speech and Language Therapy. However, as part of this there should be an emphasis on SLT on the role of the SLT in psychiatry. It is possible to work as an SLT in both child/adolescent and adult psychiatry. In Ireland, working in adult psychiatry is a relatively new (and exciting) domain of practice for SLTs but one in which there is a significant role in terms of the language and communication difficulties often associated with mental illness.

    Hope this helps:)
