How to convert MPEG Layer 3 to mp3? Or is that even necessary for iPod?

First of all, would iTunes recognise MPEG Layer 3 format and allow it to be played on an iPod?

If not, then how should I go about changing the files to mp3 format? Would just renaming them with a .mp3 extension be enough or do I need to download Nero or sumthin to do it for me?

    Cheers in advance.

MP3 stands for MPEG Audio Layer 3, and its supported by ipod.
What do you need to convert from?

Well, mp3 is an abbreviation of MPEG-1 Layer 3 so I'm wondering why your files don't already have the .mp3 extension...

Sorry... just read your post properly. If your files are some other format like .wav then you would need to convert them to MP3. Changing the extension will not work. It's a simple enough process. What format do you have?

Cheers lads, just not used to Vista and so couldn't actually find the extension, just the file 'type', which said MPEG Layer 3, which I didnt realise was actually mp3! So no need to convert at all!

    Thanks for clearing that up!

Open up an explorer window, press ALT for the menu to appear, and go to tools-> folder options. Under view, you can turn on the option to show known file extensions.
