That is an odd one - apart from the year, it has an SEC nose. Is 560 BIN a 1974 reg? It's also a 500SE (SWB), rather than an SEL. One other thing - I was under the impression that all W126 500s had a/c as standard - that car doesn't. My money's on its being a modified 1984 380SE.

SEC noses have been grafted onto quite a few cars, but this I just don't know.

560BIN is a late 1986 kerry reg,i saw that car in passing yday, must take a proper look during the week.Is it a 1974 car??

It's an early to mid 80's car, 500SE seems correct not SEL but with a 380/420/500SEC bonnet & front bumper fitted.

    Edit: Suprised no alloys fitted.

I'm almost certain that air conditioning was standard on the 500SE/SEL/SEC from launch. This car doesn't have it, but it does have a V8 - if 560 BIN is its original number and that's a late 1986 plate then that makes it (I think) a 420SE?

Its a second series w126, smooth side planks mark that out so its late 85 on. Air con was not necessarily standard on those cars, though it was on the 560. This one doesnt have leather either, and shouldn't some of the elec window switches be visible? Lived in Germany for a few years and mercs there had usually a lot fewer extras than you would expect.

Pretty expensive given it has a few knocks. SEC 'conversion' was fairly popular for a while too so thats nothing special. If youre looking for one youll find better I'd say.

the 300SD was sold in North America from new, and quite possibly South Africa - which it looks like where this one might have come from. The diesel powered W126s were not sold on in European markets from new, as far as im aware. In fact i think there was also a diesel variant of the W116 (the previous generation S-class) sold in the US.
galactic mileage on the above model

Going by the reg, i'd say that car was registered in Ireland from new. I'd therefore assume, as Blue850 said, that it's a DIY job.

@ Anan1 - thats very possible too.. I do know of a chap, who's on here occasionally, and he has fettled a W108 "SD" :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 646 ✭✭✭Johnboy Mac

Personally I'd avoid that '500SEL' with the SEC front. Would'nt even travel to look at it. Imo look out for an original '86 on W126 and consider a 300 version too. A good W126 car be purchased privately in the UK for £2-3k with SH.

There's a W108/9 for sale in this month's Irish vintage Scene with a 300D engine.
There was a brown W116 300SD on Carzone last year.

Curiousity got the better of me, i'm just off the phone to them! The car is actually registered as a 350SE, year of manufacture 1974. The cc on the log book is 4995, and the date of first registration here is 07/86. It's an old-style tax book, the car hasn't been taxed on the road since 1999. The plot thickens, eh?:)

Jeez its a real "bitsa" car!! I.D. from one merc, Body from another, front from another. sounds like a ringer. AND it looks SH1TE!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Yep,saw it earlier,it has bad paint all over, wierd filler over weld like bubbles on the upper n/s rear quarter, rust on the arch. Interior had some mould growing on it.4995 cc alright on its 1999 tax disc. There was a Gleasures of tralee sticker on the rear window, they are an undertakers in the town so it was more than likely used as funeral transport by them.
Its definatly not worth the money IMO.

If it was brought in from england it would get the 86 reg even if it was older, imports back then just got the next availible reg number.

Only saw this now, all very strange though the SEC nose conversion as mentioned was popular.

The car has a very strange spec and the fact that an undertaker owned it could mean that a conversion company first registered it and did something funny with the paperwork. I wonder does the chassis number match the log book.

Was the fact it was taken off the road at the end of 99 mean the NCT would have shown up discrepancies?

    Idly sniffing around some luxobarges....
intrigued by this (and the possibility of low tax) - the body looks too modern for 1974, is this an error?

No, thats a W126 which started production in 1979 afaik.
I'm sure someone will confirm/correct that.

Actually I reckon that its a simple mistake on the logbook. They were hand written at the time. It could easily be a '79 car with later bodywork and re-registration. What I mean is, its could have been built in '79 ( but someone is confusing the 4 and 9) then imported to Ireland and reg'd in '86.

That could explain its peculiar spec.

    Just a hunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

Quite possibly. You'd really need the chassis number to be sure with that car.

.....yes it would be interesting to see if it tallies !

Dodgy dodgy.. If the year is a genuine mistake why is it down as a 350SE which was only built up to 1979. Side planks are definitly late 85 onwards. Rear bumper could be pre 85 but the pic quality isnt too good. Either way there are plenty of better ones around with a decent equipment level so i would leave it well alone.

Anybody looking for one I'd advise a fully loaded coupe instead.

Looking at this car again I think it wears the earlier rear bumper. I can see the front has been completely changed so ignore that, it does appear to have the later side panels but that is deffo the earlier rear bumper.

Maybe it's an early W126 test mule.;)

.....yes in fact I'd say you are right, and when they saw the "560" on the reg plate they figured "mmmmmm now there's a good idea ! " :P
