esetting Computer

I got an old desktop from a mates office that i was planning to use as a secondary computer at home. I've got three problems with it though.

Firstly it's still clogged up with all the documents and applications that were run on it at the office and I want to clear everything.

Secondly I can't get it to work on the internet. I connected to my router in another room through some device that works through the plug sockets. I thought that device wasn't working but my other desktop and laptop had no problems connecting through it.

Lastly the RAM on it's quite low so I was planning to cannibalise another even older desktop I have lying around that I haven't turned on for years. Is it difficult to do this? Are there any particular risks to be aware of?

The computers a Fujitsu Siemens Scenic Edition X101 running Windows XP professional.
I've never really done this sort of thing before and I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

Its resonable easy you very old comp might not have ram thats compatable with the one you working on.There is a way to get some ram free of charge.
If you happen to be in your local recycling center and you chance upon the comp bin or whatever the pc are in have a look at the sticker on the pc`s if there is one with xp installed give it a shake no rattel = private person recycling should have some parts inside hd ram cd/dvd drives ect if it rattles a shop has probaly recycled it and had it away with the parts (a freind of mine said he dose this).
touch your hand off a copper pipe (cold one) before handling componets and you should be grand!
