Can unrecommended spark plugs damage coil pack?

Bought a used Mazda 323. Had to replace a coil pack straight away due to misfires. (The other coil pack had been changed at some stage also...).

It's driving fine again, but inspected the spark plugs. Turns out they are Bosch Super Plus. The car manual only recommends Denso Iridium tipped (plugs for the European ZM engine).

Is it possible that unrecommended plugs shortened the life of the coil pack?

Highly unlikely so long as the plugs are the same spec(heat range etc)

Didn't feel anything while driving, but the car logged another random misfire.

So, replaced all four sparkplugs with Denso Iridium tipped ones. Got these off a Mazda dealer, so they are the genuine part replacement for this model.

They wern't cheap, but 'Iridium tough' usually last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. So they will probably be the only set of plugs I ever buy for it. Engine seems a fair bit smoother around the 2000 rpm mark. (on saying that the old Bosch plugs were overgapped a little.. so that wasn't helping the random misfire P0300 problem).

I was told before by a peugeot main dealer that that the wrong spec plugs when fitted to a peugeot can damage the coil pack.

I read something like that in some Peugeot forum, but straight away the next poster dismissed the claim by saying that the only way that a coil pack can be damaged by a plug is if the gap is closed causing a short circuit. (The gap could end up closed if the plug is dropped on the ground and the ground electrode gets bent towards the centre electrode...)

Also mentioned the fact that a microscopic crack could have been put in the coil pack by the last mechanic who replaced the plugs, by being too rough when handling the packs.

Still leaves the original question open... the mystery continues.... :)
