Temperatures and crashing

Been having a few problems lately with crashing, mainly while playing Red Alert 3. A few minutes into a game the screen will garble (like 90% of the pixels suddenly turn green) then the computer will lock, requireing a hard reset. Only seems to happen when I'm playign online, dont remember it happening when I'm playign skirmish Vs the computer, but cant be 100%

My system consists of an Asus PK 5 Premium, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Geforce 8800GT. 4 gigs ram (cant remember off hand which I bought). Processor and GPU running with stock coolers. Have rear and side exhaust fans. My 2 HDD's (500GB HD501 LJ samsungs) are in the front 5.25 bays in these http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=ODM= They have 2 temp sensors each, I have one attached to the body of each HDD and the other 2 spread out in the case.

I installed PC wizard 2008 to check temperatures.

After abouts 3 hours of browsing the 2 Antec HD coolers are showing 31, 32, 34 and 28oC on the 4 snsors(their own ones, not pc wizard).
Pc wizard is giving the temps of my 4 cores on the CPU as 63, 65, 66 and 67o C

It's giving the GPU temp as 63 and a GPU ambiant temp as 40 oC saying the GPU fan is at 16% (it hasnt gone above 22% in the few days I've been using pc wizard.

It's giving my HDD temps as 28 and 30.

I took the side off my case and moved the system away from the wall(the back is sitting about 10" off the wall) yesterday but havnt played a game since. The temps on Pc Wizard dont seem to have dropped.

I'm guessing temperature is my issue, any suggestions?

Run prime95 (or whatever it's called now). It stresses the computer trying to cause miscalculations (usually caused by overclocking / heat). Let it run for a good few hours and report back here. Make sure it's using all 4 cores on your quad.

Forget about the temps that temp monitor is giving, it reads from sensors on the board, no way of knowing how accurate it is. Use CoreTemp as it measures from a sensor on the chip instead.

Run prime 95 for an hour and report here what your temperatures are after an hour. Heres a better source for Prime 95 that won't confuse You.

Side exhaust fans? Side fans are supposed to blow inward to cool the graphics card........they can hinder airflow to the cpu though and cause a rise in cpu temps, I never bother with side fans myself. Remember, You can only remove as much air as You blow in, cold air in at the front bottom and out at the top rear is the usual route, side fans generally just interfere

Coretemp is giveing the temp of the 4 cores all at mid 70's now.

We need the temperatures from the CPU on load with Prime95. It wont be miscalculating anything on stock speeds. From what you've already said though it seems to be a heat problem. 60+ on idle is really bad.

Jut doing it as you posted.:) edited into post above.

The 4 cores seem to be hovering around 77 -80 now.

The Antrec HD coolers are giving temps of 36/36 and 22/31 for the 4 probes (2 in the case, 2 on the hdd's)

Ok well there is your problem! Do you have the stock intel CPU cooler on it? You'll have to get yourself an aftermarket cooler if so.

EDIT: Your problem will very rarely be the HDDs. Overheating and crashing come from the graphics card or the CPU.

Yeah, the stock cooler is on it.

I only have a dual-core so I don't know what would be good to cool a quad-core. Plus my cooler is a freaky piece of german tech. How much would you be willing to pay for a new cooler? Anything from 40-60 will get you something that can keep your CPU at around 60 on full load.

TBH if it's something important like this I'd rather spend the 40-60 to be sure.

What computer case do you have? A lot of the better coolers may not fit inside your case if it is too small.

A cheap icute one I bought to fill a temperary gap that never got changed.:) I have a good 4" of depth to fit it in tho

You'll defo want to look into a bigger case. Mines about 8" wide and even at that my cooler almost doesnt fit

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/2631893/art/cooler-master/geminii-s-cpu-fan.html

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/1352455/art/noctua/nh-c12p-multi-socket-cpu.html

Those two look like they should fit, but performance really relates to size when it comes to air cooling on a cpu, the more air you get through the heatsink the better your temps are.

Stock cooler on a Q6600 is madness, the problem with the stock cooler is that it is not a directional cooler. As in it does not shift air in one particular direction i.e towards the rear exhaust fan. Instead the stock intel cooler just mashes the air in a 360 degree ass**** of high temps. Even something as basic as a artic freezer pro which is about 20-30 bucks on komplett.ie will do a much better job.

Remember aswell, the Q6600 is a seriously hot running beast, especially in multithreaded applications, its a fast chip but very poorly designed from a thermal perspective. Also as mentioned before by poggy, make sure the cool air is comming in from the front and sides and ward air being expelled by the back and top.

I often worry about that layout. I have 2 front fans and one exhaust on the back high. GPU and PSU suck air from the same space which isnt being fed by the front fans properly. I guess I'll have to get a side fan for over the GPU. Pix don't sell any 3-pin splitters though.. What should I use to add more fans to my computer even though all the 3-pin controllers on the MoBo are being used?

    That?

I can't make out what that is -.-

Is that 3 molex connections on the top?

Think its safe to say its the stock cooler. Just did a very scientific :pac: experiment with a desk fan an I have the 4 cores idleing around 49-50 oC.

    Use this

Here's links to the Arctic Freezer Pro and Arctic Silver Thermal Compound. If You live in Dublin You can also collect from Hitide

I've got a Tuniq CPU cooler

    HS-002-SB_400.jpg

hooked up to my Intel Quad Core. The thing is massive and was an absolute b1tch to install. You need a large case too, but my idle temps are in the low 30's so does make a massive difference.

How does the Mobo respond to the weight of that thing hanging sideways off it? It must be nearly pulled off the mounts.:)

I've also got the Tuniq Tower, just not with the blue fan, excellent cooler but its absolutely massive. Its part of the reason (and big case with 80cfm yate loon fans) that I can run my B3 stepping Q6600 (much hotter than G0's) at 3.2Ghz 24/7 :D

Nah, although it's big, it's not all that heavy, just awkward to get the bugger fitted. I ended up taking out my PSU and graphics card in order to get some elbow room whilst installing it and my case is pretty damned big.
