Whats you budget and what have you in mind?

Great time to buy. Good value to be had.

There is also even better value in the private market so i wouldn't rule that out by just dealing with garages.

From cars i've bought ive found that the private sale is better as the seller has always looked after me. Gave it a service got its nct done sometimes garages just see the big picture of the cash and don't want to deal with things like nct etc.

If you know anyone that knows a bit about cars I'd ask them to help you pick out a private car and go see it, you'll get much better value from private sellers.

If you have the cash you really couldn't go wrong with this

I wouldn't be restricting myself to only dealers OP, even if a warranty is provided it often doesn't cover much. It's definitely worth going through what a warranty covers and what price you can get privately. As has been mentioned, it's a buyers market, so don't feel you have to buy the first car you see!
If you want better advice as to what cars, maybe provide a bit more info, like a budget and size/type of car?

They're just down the road from me, and they're OK to deal with. Shame that they don't have much stock, because they would normally have a great selection for a first car. When we bought off them, their prices were very competitive. Never had to deal with them afterwards, which is a good thing in its own right, but I can't tell you what their after sales service is like.

Anyway, I would pick the car I want first and then worry about who is selling it.

Polo is an OK car, but there was another thread about them yesterday - they seem to be going for crazy money. Plus it really needs to have power steering because they are a pig to drive without it. The fiesta would be a good option as well - I think the 1.25 litre engine is the one to go for. Again, check for power steering. My wife had one without it, and it wasn't fun.

Anyone who describes a 1.4 Focus as a "Sporty Coupe" deserves a good kicking, not free publicity.
