Changing oil on a diesel frequently?

Just wondering is it worth to change oil frequently (5000 miles)

I have a 03 (old model) turbo diesel fiesta van. In the book it says every 10,000 miles but on my old one (non turbo) i changed it every 5K and never gave any trouble.
My friend had a Seat Inca and did the same, 130 K and no bother either!

Is this just wasting my money or is it worth it??

I change it myself so it costs 30-35 euro so its not major..

I do about 12,000 miles a year and there is 70K on it.

Yours thoughts would be great on this one!

If you are putting the manufacturers recommended spec of oil in the engine I don't really see the need to change it any more frequently.

I've done the same as yourself down tru the years and never had any
engine problems...running a Peugoet 406 td at the moment with 205k on the clock and it doesn't even need a top of oil between services...:)

The quality of oil has improved alot tru the years ...but i still change mine
    every 7k.

I'd imagine more frequent oil changes would prolong engine life, but at what cost and to what end? Most cars will be scrapped long before their engines wear out in any case, so is there any point in spending money on ensuring the car has a fresher engine when it goes to the crusher? Just a thought.

Good point...The way i look at it is if the owner can service the car themselves it works out alot cheaper than going to a dealer/garage.

As kodak says above 30-35 euro every service is no major expenditure,
I service my car every 7k which means i only have to do it twice a year or less.....so for 60-70 euro (tank of diesel) i can keep my car well serviced.

I normally pick up 10w/40 semi-syn and an oil filter for less than
30 euro ....and an hour laying under my car...I can do a visual check
other stuff while the oil is draining.....:)

im the same. nothing keeps an engine healthy than good oil! i do mine every 5k, but mine is a chain driven engine so it loves fresh oil.

by changing it this frequently anyways ya dont have to go all out buying expensive oils, a cheaper brand changed more frequently is better than a well known brand changed less frequently:)

this is my theory and you know its right;)
