Does the frequency of the knocking increase as a function of the speed of the vehicle? The faster you go, the faster the knocking?

Have you checked that the nuts keeping on the wheel are tight.

You can laugh if you want to but a back wheel passed me down the road one day and I had heard some noise from back there but thought it was loose or holed exhaust. It wasn't.

As you can tell I wait for a serious breakdown before becoming slightly concerned.

First thing to check is get out a wheelbrace and make sure that both wheels are on tight... Seriously!

Don't laugh now...! Check that the jack is secure in the boot and that everything in that area is secure! I had a customer who had been to 4 mechanics with a rattle and none of them could sort it out but all charged her! Problem was found to be a loose jack that was rattling around in the spare wheel storage area everytime she went over a ramp!

If it isn't this, try moving the exhaust pipe around a bit with your hand and see if you can simulate the noise.

Does the knocking speed up as the car speeds up?

I had exactly that noise before on an 02 Skoda Fabia and I assumed it was a bushing or a shock but it actually turned out to be either a broken anti-roll bar or a broken thingamajig (that's the technical term I believe) on the anti-roll bar that was making it slide around the place and go thump every time I went over a bump. Handling was crap on the car too till I got it fixed.
No idea how likely that is to be the case with you. My ma had something similar and it was a shock thing rather than an anti-roll bar thing.

It sounds like an anti roll bar bushing.

everything is secure in the boot and the rear and it only happens when going over bumps etc it isnt present on a smooth surface and has no realationship with speed, exhaust seems secure so must be shock/anti roll bar related off to my local mechanic thanks for all your help appreciated

I agree or otherwise, droplinks. But I would go with the bushings first!
