So violently kill someone dump there body in a freezer for 5 years and you will get just 8 years..

Help your daughters chop up your fella and hide the pieces and sure you will only get 5 years..

Drink drive and kill 5 and sure you will only do 4 years.

Or smuggle €400M worth of coke into the country and you can spend 10 years banged up

Is it me or have the courts been lenient this week?

They've all learned their lesson I'm sure.

That coke bust was mostly good luck on behalf of the cops. The judge owed those boys a cushy sentence.

I wish the Judges here would watch "Lock Up", an American documentary series about life in US prisons.

    Now that's justice!!!

Our Prisons need room for TV Licence dodgers and people who don't pay small fines, can't have drug smugglers / dealers and killers using the space for too long.

Yup, the American system works better than ours for sure. The proof is in the vastly lower crime rates and social inclusion that characterise that fine nation. Oh wait...

That's why they created the District courts...

It's nothing to do with the judges. It's to do with our outdated legal code based on the old UK system.

Lot of inacuracies here I'm afraid

case one was manslaughter - self defence was pleaded

case two...the charge was trying to cover up a crime...not "helping to kill"

    case three is as above

case four...arrest was made in International waters ..so not trying to smuggle "into the country"

I agree though that the sentencing these days is on the lenient side...wasn't there a case up in Bettystown where two young ones went at it in a supermarket which ended in a stabbing.....?

the person who drank and drove and killed 5 people is now permantely confined to a wheelchair, i think thats pretty good punishment

And yet those dodgers get to watch TV in prison, hardly a punishment to fit the crime!

The judges have to follow a precedent. If they give out a mad sentance(which is what should be done)the person will just appeal it,citing previous similiar cases. They will just get off lightly.

Unfortunately for him, his licence has also been suspended, so he can't drive it for six months.

    It's just you.
They are lenient and then you have the case of Michael Hannon. Cleared of Child Sexual Abuse once the victim came forward to retract after he had served his sentence and not a murmur except from Kevin Myers. it didnt cause an outcry.

Irish courts? No, they seem to be cracking down judging by those sentences.

I really wish I was joking.

I was told it was on the front page of all the Irish papers.

    Hardly not a murmur.

    Hardly not a murmur.

Its very controversial and is a real "political" hot potato.

Its in the same vein & as close as we've gotten in Ireland to being exonerated from Death Row .

Probably because its unusual and that public representatives and interest groups are silent on the matter.

What we need in this country is more people like Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

Bash the US all you like, but catch any of our political masters even approaching such a unique slant on punishment and rehabilitation.

Being confined to a wheelchair is something he done to himself as a consequence of his own actions. The state and the victims have a right to punish him also.

He was drinking from 6.30pm and the crash happened at 3:15am.
Feck sake, I've had trouble getting the nightlink home after binges like that, never mind driving home.

So he only got about 9 months in prison per person he killed.
About the same time each of their mothers took to gestate them.

No. No it's not. Whether or not he's in a wheelchair shouldn't factor into this at all. It's his fault he's in a wheelchair, and it's his fault 5 people are dead.

If someone who was already in a wheelchair was in front of a judge, would you want them to be shown leniency?. I should hope not, the law cant show favouritism or descrimination.

    Yeah.
That dude who shot 6 people in Galway last week should be dismembered and then pissed on and then stabbed in the heart.

    3 years just wasn't enough.

The justice system in this country is a joke, if you told some of those cases to a foreigner they would think you were taking the piss.

Things will not get any better here until REAL justice is brought in. Nobody has the balls to do it though.

I'm getting out ASAP. I've given up on this hole of a place and I won't apologize to anybody for saying that.

People need to pay less attention to Sheriff joe, not more.
He's a corrupt, powerhungry thug, nobody in their right mind should want anything to do with that moral vacuum
