Ok so i was trying to rotate my tyres and one of the locking nuts was being a b*tch to get off, gave it a propper whack and the key falls off, picked it back up and now 3/4 of the key teeth are gone,

what can i do to get all my locking nuts off and replaced, also how much will it cost ?

you can get a locking wheel nut key replaced, you need to find a main dealer with a master set to see which one fits, then they order it in for you... I got one recently, cost < 50 EUR

Locking nuts are a joke if they're tightened too much

Some tyre places will take them off for you but they will ruin the nuts in the process. Most people are grand with that though as I haven't heard of anyones alloys being nicked in years

Should've used some WD40. A welder should be able to weld a bit of metal to the tip which should allow leverage / grip to remove the locking nut. I've heard of this being done, but never actually seen the results :o.

i preffer the options with getting them off , these locking nuts are a bitch and are tightened too tight, even the normal nuts wont come off on 2/4 wheels, will a garage/tyre centre be able to get rid of them alltogether and give me new ones that arent rusted to sh*t

I can remove lock nuts - if you're in the D15 area over the weekend I can do it for you. You'll need a new bolt or nut though.

I'm juts going to give the two of you some advice on this job because I've seen lads having this issue before...!

If you are going at this, just make sure you understand each other that in order to remove the wheel, it could be damaged, and by damaged I mean a few scratches up to chunks being taken out of the wheel!

It's all very well going at this but the last thing you want is someone giving it a try, the wheel getting butchered and one person delighted with the result and the other p*ssed off that an alloy was ruined in the process!

This particular task looks eaasier than it is, and these lock buts were made extremely difficult to get off without a key for a reason!

I think that's a classic case of "here's one I prepared earlier! You can bet your bottom dollar when you go to try this, the wheel nut will be literally bet on! :D:D:D

where did you get charged that?

i lost the locking but key off my BMW and i got a brand new one from Joe Duffy BMW in finglas for 10 euro! guy came out with a big tool box with loads of keys in it, tryed a few until one fitted and then said yes its a code XX. got me a key from the code XX box and that was it, there and then.

also if you dont know where the lock nuts came from, or wether they are OEM or aftermarket, most tyre places will drill them off, now you will need a new set after that.

The results are dramatic. I've seen a welder successfully get a lock nut off the wheel, at the expense of the Alloy. The wheel was ruined, while it was blackened by the torch, the heat generated to heat up the lock nut ended up warping the wheel. An option that the owner knew about but had to get the wheel off to get mobile again. The other options were getting the car lifted by the AA or someone who could take the car away and fix the problem. It was cheaper to sacrifice the wheel.

I had this exact same problem today. Its not too hard to do. Attach a strong metal pipe into the bottom of the key. Then continue as normal but stand on the pipe with both feet, with a loud creak, it will untighten

What if you break the key in the process? The brute force way doesn't always work. ;)

Not if its an AUDI and have a VAG made key :D
    Good ol' german reliability :p

I somehow read over the fact the key broke, I thought he just couldnt get the bolts off.

The brute force way always seems to work for me atleast.
