    Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get my uncle's tractor up and running. Use it for a few jobs and what not. It hasn't been turned over in a year or so.

Just wondering what advice you would have before cranking it up?

    Thanks in advance.

After a year it should be ok.

To be on the safe side you should change the diesel filter to clear any sediment that may have settled there.

If your really want to be careful take the rocker cover off and poor oil along the valve stems incase they have dried out and stuck to the valves. Then slowly turn the engine over by hand.

When you do start it, let it tick over for a bit before revving.

After a short run it could be a good idea to change the oil and filter.

Check for coolant and that the rad/pipes haven't split with frost or perished.

Leave the stopper pulled out (or disconnect the fuel solenoid if it's a modern tractor) and spin it on the starter until it builds oil pressure; push in stopper and start the engine, letting it warm on a fast idle and watching for oil/coolant leaks.

Oh, and look for birds' nests in the belts/pulleys and under the bodywork. :D

Change the oil filter if its a replaceable type , some can break up a bit while in storage. Probably won't but filters are cheap.

there are a few ways and thoughts on the best way to fire it up

after checking the oil, water and hydraulic levels,i would
    1 drain the diesel tank
2 take out the tank connector as most tractors have a tiny filter there that blocks up
    3 change the fuel filter
4 if there is a manual priming lift pump, take off the front of the case,as sludge builds up here
5 the diesel injector pump has a plate on the bottom, take that off and leave the crap diesel out
6 put diesel in the tank and bleed it to the filter(until it fills up)
7 carry on to the injector pump
8 if you can undo one of the pipes at the injector,do so,they might break if old
9 connect the battery, turn the key(if any) or cross the starter with a big screwdriver:rolleyes:
10 fuel should spurt out of the injector pipe
    11 reconnect it,and try again

there should be smoke coming out of the exhaust,if not, there is no diesel getting through
make sure the stopper is in and the throttle is fully open

in the last 3 weeks i did a roadless that was idle for 4+ years and a massey that was idle for 10 or more

black smoke was had by all, good craic

if all else fails, check out youtube

What if there is fluid in a cylinder?
What if water was getting in through the exhaust stack?
What if the piston rings where rusted up from the water and sealing thus holding fluid?
What if you spin the engine on the starter?

Answer: Con rod out the block

    TO ALL PLEASE NOTE:

BAR ENGINE OVER BY HAND WITH RATCHET ON FRONT CRANKSHAFT PULLEY

All previous suggestion are valid but please never do these without baring over the engine by ratchet
