I was just listening to a bit of Matt Cooper on the way home & there was a woman on talking about Eco Driving, Air Con off, windows closed yada yada the usual stuff.

She did however make one point I've not heard before, that driving with a full tank of fuel is better because the air in the tank helps the fuel burn or something, I'm not quite sure on the specifics but her point was to keep it full anyway..

Surely lugging around a full tank of fuel at all times would outweigh ANY benifits of having less "airy" fuel??

Sounds like rubbish to me tbh, doesn't make sense. I've heard eco warriors tell people not to fill up there tanks. But never the opposite.

This kind of talk should be banned on a motoring forum. :p

There may be some truth to it. I drive a 2.5 diesel and have been monitoring the fuel efficiency - which requires refilling the tank on refueling.

I have noticed significant decreases in fuel consumption per mile when I keep the tank full. For example with the last three refuels I have done, refilling the tank with 14L gave a fuel efficiency of 0.125L/mile. The next refuel was 64L and gave a fuel efficiency of 0.138L/mile. And the next was 51L with an efficiency of 0.132L/mile.

Now of course things like driving style, urban/motorway, load and air temperature will affect the efficiency greatly. But overall with these last refuels all these have been pretty consistent I believe.

So if it is the case that having a full tank imporves fuel efficiency, at least in my case there's a differnce of 0.01L - or roughly 1c per mile.

It would be great to know why this may be the case though.

What's that in cubic poles per furlong?

One thing made sense I have defo noticed myself.

Soft tyres can rob you of several miles a tank on a consistent journey.

I always knew I have a slightly soft tyre on my car as I would drop efficiency.

otherwise no real difference. Leave the bags of cement out of the boot, the tank full all the time wouldn't be worth all the fuel stops.

No liters. When the tank is 'minus' 14 Liters there's an average fuel efficiency of 0.125 of a liter per mile. Or roughly 33.5 MPG.

There's a mixture of imperial and SI units there I know, but it suits my odometer ;)
