I have been thinkin about this recently,do i prefer training or racing.i know i get a lot of satisfaction out of putting in a hard weeks training and enjoy the soltitude of long runs on my own or an odd run with the club group or with a training partner.having done a lot of races over the past while ive found my self give out alot about races and the amount of hassle of running them, gettin numbers, hanging around waitin to start,etc.etc.any body else like this or am i just grumpy b****x:D

I like them both but for different reasons. Even within the category racing, I love small local (tea and sandwiches after) races and big razmatazz (ironman) races equally but again for different reasons. I think what get's me is the variety, sometimes on my own to clear the head, sometimes in a big crowd for the craic. I guess it's why triathlon appeals to me, the variety of training and racing.

but to answer your question, you're just a GOM (or you're not doing the right races) :D

I love races. I enjoy trying to beat your previous time over that distance. But I also enjoy the training. So I like both but prefer racing.

Its gotta be racing. The warmup, I love the warmup when you know there is only an hour to your race and you might get your gear together and head off to do your warmup. I love at Nationals in Santry when you are waiting in the callroom and shake the hand wishing the best to the boys around you and you are walked onto the track and in your head you say "this is it".

The feeling in a race when you know a bit before the finish that "yes, I have this, I'm in control and this feels easy" can never be repeated in training. Its rarely repeated in a race but when it is it is unbeatable and as good as when you actually cross the line and know you have won.

Or in the leagues. You are wrecked, have run a few races already and tried your hand at a field event to get a few points but when the 4 x 400 relay comes around everybody raises their game for one last push at the end of a long and (usually) hot and sweaty day. I love that feeling just before the 4 x 400 and all teams are gathered on the trackside.

Training should be a means to an end and the end is racing.

That's the bit I hate, I keep looking around me, thinking "she looks fast"
