    *no pumpkins, headstones, spiders etc*

    Suggestions?

Venue has a courtyard which will allow us an outdoor fire, inside has many open fire places which will all be lit. Any light will be coming from candles and very dim lights.

Would giving out masquerade masks as wedding favours be veeeeeeeery tacky?

This is over a year away, but must get my ideas now as for some reason people seem to think I'm a bit mad not having everything booked

Mods, I know this rightly belongs in the weddings forum, but if it's ok, I was hoping to get a few suggestions from the nocs first?

If I make a good suggestion can I go?

I rather like the sound of your wedding Helena - nocturnal themed :)

I don't think handing those masks out is a tacky idea, you're combining traditional with nocturnal and a splash of fun. I think slightly alternate weddings that aren't as hyped with stress and OMG everything has to be white and perfect is good. Means you might enjoy it more, and remember it better. I've no ideas just yet but I'll get thinking :)

i think having a nocturnal mod/local monster hunter/priest of the old ways bless you would be awesome...

    cough...

    ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

Yes galva - course you can. Has to be an AMAZING idea though.

Oh Nerin, you were my first choice, but then I thought I'd be soooo shy asking you, so I asked my RM instead and now I can't exactly tell her I don't want her anymore :(

Thats a good point SP, it probably will be less stress. Although, I will be having the white dress. ;)

I mean having the wedding *your* way :) white dress is allowed :P
What type of wedding is it, ceremony wise? I know a friend of mine had one in a circular fort they'd made on the ground (or similar) in his back garden and was more of a bonding ceremony.
oooooooooooh autumn leaves would rock, you know really crispy?

Question: Is it a religious ceremony (I'm guessing not)? If so it might limit options available to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

We will be having a church blessing, to hedge our bets. Also both families are pretty religious not to mention the fact the OH doesn't want to do anything "too different"

Then having a ceremony in the grounds of the venue, in a little clearing in the trees. Hopefully the ground covered in crispy leaves as opposed to mud. :o

SP the drive to the venue from the church has trees hanging over most of the roads, a beautiful when the leaves are turned. :)

Basicially, the church is going to be the same old thing everyone does. The ceremony in the venue will be very private, probably just me and K and my RM tbh.

The reception, I need help on - badly.

    Hm.

    Perhaps Victorian dress?

Doesn't have to be victorian, but you know, something old and romanticised.

Would consider music, perhaps some dead can dance in the background before the festivites hit would set a mood.

ok, you've come to the right place....

    * puts on wedding co-ordinator hat *
(I knew the 1000 odd weddings I've worked at would come in handy somewhere)
    :)

What have you booked? Have you music? Will it be a band and dj or something else? Have you catering? Are there facilities for this on-site or will you need to get that hired in too? Tables and chairs provided or do you need to rent them? Do you expect people to be indoors or out? What are the contingency plans for bad weather? Will it need to be photographed/videoed? Have you sent invitations yet and if so have they informed people that things are going to be a little different? Will guests be expecting a waltz or a Siege of Ennis in the dances? Have you made arrangements for rooms for people to stay in? Have you got a list of alternatives close by?

Feel free to PM me if you like - I've just thrown a hell of a lot at ya there :)

Yes old, plain and simple dress but without doubt I want a cape with a hood (I'll not call it by it's proper name too superstitious :o). Getting to have a cape without looking like a weirdo is the best part of a winter wedding.

Dead can dance? Not familiar. Shall I youtube?

Suits you sir. 1000 weddings?!?! Need a new best friend? :P

Nothing at all. Nothing Nothing Nothing. We do have our hotel picked though.
    Kharn wrote: »

No music booked, but the OH is in a band, obviously he can't play the whole night, but among our friends we have enough musicians to keep us going. Might book a band for after the meal, but staying away from DJ's, who wants to hear "buttercup" again? So band after dinner, then something of an open stage I think. Don't have the band booked either. :(

All provided thankfully. Lovely food too.

Both, courtyard/smoking area with small fires dotted here and there for people who wish to be outside, there is partial canopy covering if needed, if it's too horrible out, people can come back to the room.
    Kharn wrote: »

Definately photographed - not too sure of video, a bit cringy for me :o but if we do decide on a video, my cousin, who is studying filmmaking will do something unusual for us.

no invitations yet, it's over a year away. People wont be told it's going to be a little different. It wont be too much different. The usual format will still stand I think, with little twists. Besides, it can be a suprise for them :)
    Kharn wrote: »

Ha - they can expect if they like.... wont be happening though.

Not very many rooms in the venue, it's not realy a hotel, only opens for occasions, so some will be staying there, but we will have a list of accom to send with the invitations.

:D Phew, maybe I'm not as badly organised as I have been led to believe.

Yea, easily a thousand weddings I'd say - 5 years of hotel work :)

You are right though, you're not as badly off as you've been lead to believe :D

I would reccommend getting a band none-the-less - but let them know people'll be going up and down for a few tunes, but there's no pressure on guests to be expected to go up and do something if there's no alternative. Also, it means you don't have to rely on guest to be bringing equipment and instruments.

So really, it's down to details like a colour schemes and picking your meal and wine and all that. Have you bridesmaids dresses sorted yet? If you're wearing white that's grand - they can go for whatever and then match the rest of the decoration (flowers, napkins, balloons etc etc) around that. Here's where you could be a little different - some dark purples or greens might be interesting.

Basically, I'd say you were in good shape!

I think you should have the following at your wedding:

Pumpkins, headstones, spiders and... Oh hang on a second.

I suggest you become a "Bride of Franc" whose name isn't Franc it's Peter and who is definately NOT gay  and who always pays his taxes, honest :p

But seriously, I think that once you have your dress, the bridesmaid's dresses, invitations, venues, a band/ D.J. hired, then the rest should all fall into place.

Bobbing for apples at a wedding ... now that sounds like fun!

How about bobbing for wedding rings?

    Too impractical?

    Ooh! Balloons! Me!

They're not very nocturnal in and of themselves, to be fair... But they do come in muted colours and there's loads you can do with them. I used to work for a party shop/event company so I know all the tricks :) Aside from balloons and decorations you could look at centrepieces - something leafy and autumnal instead of flowers? And then of course chair covers, chair ties and tablecloths. It's amazing the sort of themed look you can give something just using subtle things like covers.

Don't want to name the company on-thread Helena, but PM me if you want more info! I can point you in the right direction :)

They're a band which only uses ye olde worlde instruments. Whenever you hear a woman singing in a film in a greek or Celtic lilt, for atmos, it tends to be the young lady from Dead Can Dance. :)

EDIT: VB fu seems to be weak. Here's the link.

    Or Enya. >_>

Victorian High-Gothicy style is a cool way to go. Dark and slightly fussy clothes etc. Very formal morning suits or something along those lines for the men.

Dead Can Dance always strikes me as more "genuine" to me than enya.

Dress the tables wth lots of lovely autmn leaves and make the colours for the wedding those golden brown and russet hues.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

yea, fupp Enya in the ear, she's exceptionally annoying and boring. DCD are a much better choice (and my band is covering one of their tunes :))

    Oooh Love this idea.

You could leave the lights down low and use candles if you wanted that autumnal twilighty feel...

    OOh weddings! Belated congrats Helena.

I was at a wedding where they had lots of huge glass bowls filled with water and lots of floating lights outside. It gave the light and minimised the risk of setting people on fire, looked lovely as well. :D

My wedding, back in the day, was in September and the colours I used were dark gold and dark wine red. Bouquets had dark yellow cala lillies and lots of berried stems with some dark ivy. They did look the biz while being very simple. Lots of dried up beech leaves were used instead of flower petals for confetti. Dont know where the florist got them cos the trees were still in full leaf at the time.
The best idea I had for the wedding, apart from marrying my wonderful OH, :D was a harpist who did all the music for the church. It was gorgeous.

Anyway best of luck with it all.

Thanks so much. Well we have now decided to go for a wedding in Greece so your great ideas can't be used :( (well most of them can't)

However, in keeping loyal to the forum, it wil be a sunset wedding so it kinda counts as nocturnal(ish)?

    :p
