    right lads,

right lads, im just finishing up college and iv decided im about to buy a car!
got about 6gs to spend and im facying buyin a nice tidy golf or something like that. dont know alot about cars to be honest and i was just wondering what way i should go about it, dealers, classifieds etc.....best deals obviously

i wouldnt mind lookin at other cars also, something about a 1.4 engine size would do me, and dependable!!!, god knows i wont be able to fix the shagin thing if it keeps on breakin!

oh and i want a car with a sack! soo no micras or matchbox cars from the middleeast, or korea! no offense to the people but im 6ft4 and they just dont make them for me!

    Any advice?

buy an old car for a couple of hundred..... no point in buying a car for a couple of thousand at the moment as they loose too much money as soon as you sign on the dotted line.

    I have an alfa 146 1.6 00' I am thinking of selling.

I'm looking to buy an old mini. like a go- kart! Something older which is easier to work on yourself as most mechanics charge 60 - 80 an hour for labour!!!

not too conserned bout the sell on price to be honest!
if im buyin it ill keep it for a good while so i wouldnt be expect to be selling it any time soon!
id be happier with rliability, which i dont think youd get for a car worth a couple a hundred!

What about a 02/03 Hyundai Coupe?

This Mitsubishi would be a great buy!!

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1366114

Reliable as anything and I bet you get the 05 one above for under 5k, it might be a bit underpowered but its a bargain for what it is.Comfortable, reliable, cheap, full service histrory, low milage and you wont lose much on it at that price when you come to sell.

Sqaull20 +1. My first was a mitsubishi, fantastic car. Bought it and never put another cent into it. (apart from services obviously)

What about a 02/03 Hyundai Coupe?

Great recommendation, had one for a while and had to sell.....no room for a baby seat in the back :(

But i'm planning to get another one again in a year or 2.

But as the OP is 6'4" he might have space issues, my head was a couple of inches away from the roof and i'm around 6 foot.

I know a lad, around 6'6" and he fits in the finest, although the back seat leaves much to be desired with him in it!

Golf's a good car, personally not mad about them but that's just me.

Is this your first car? Would you go north or to england for the right deal?

Newer model focus (04-) is a lovely car, might be pushing your budget a bit but worth a look.

I'd recommend you pick up a copy of autotrader and spend a few hours flicking through it. You'll have a much better idea of what's out there, what you like, and a rough idea of cost. Then it will be much easier to narrow down the search. Carzone can be a bit intimidating when there's 55k+ used cars listed on it.

There's very good value to be had on the likes of mondeos, passats and similar sized cars. Obviously tax and insurance will increase, and many will put them down as boring cars, not for someone just out of college, but worth a glance all the same.

Go to a few dealers and drive some different makes and models...

6 grand is a lot of money to spend on a car and if i were you id go back in years and get something big. like i bought a 96 primera gt. leather interior and all the comfort extras etc and i paid about 1400 inc VRT (got it up north)

before this i had a 206 and it needed about this amount put into it to get it through the nct, and the primera flew through :)

so go for old and big. these are usually very comfy, reliable etc and you have lots of change if something does have to be done;)
