Damn 3G iPhone - Wifi drops

    Hi

I had a first generation iPhone which worked fine for a year until I dropped it down the toilet. When the insurance company were replacing it, they did me a 'favour' and replaced it with a 3G version.
But the wifi connection on this new 3G iPhone keeps dropping. It connects for a couple of seconds and then immediately defaults to Edge or 3G. Its not a signal strength issue, because I never had this issue with the old one, and my laptop works fine. Also, when I look at the wifi network, the strength is showing with maximum strength.

I have done a search on the internet and switching on/off my router, resetting the netwrok settings etc do not work.

Anyone resolve this here? I am on the O2 network, it is not an unlocked phone

    Thanks
    C

A few needed questions first bud...

What Firmware version do you have on the iPhone?

    Is is Jailbroken?

What router are you connecting to?

What wireless security do you use? (WPA-PSK, WEP etc.)

Do you get an IP address in the networks details on the iPhone?

    Hi... answers are

What Firmware version do you have on the iPhone? 2.2.1 Modem Firmware is 02.30.03

Is is Jailbroken? Nope - genuine O2 merchandise

What router are you connecting to? Eircom Netopia 2247-02

What wireless security do you use? (WPA-PSK, WEP etc.) - WEP Manual

Do you get an IP address in the networks details on the iPhone?
Not sure about this one - when I go to Settings > General > Network > WiFi > Selecting my Wifi Network Then I see an IP address & Subnet Mask for my wifi connection

2.2.1 Modem Firmware is 02.30.03 - Have you tried a backup and restore?

WEP Manual - I highly suggest changing that to WPA-PSK.

Not sure about this one - when I go to Settings > General > Network > WiFi > Selecting my Wifi Network Then I see an IP address & Subnet Mask for my wifi connection - What IP do you get? It it 192.168.1.xx or 169.254.xx.xx?

WEP Manual - I highly suggest changing that to WPA-PSK.

How do I do this? When setting up the router I just had an option to generte a WEP key (though I will check again)

    169.254.xx.xx

Why is it just a 3G issue? The previous iPhone was fine

Well that's your answer, the 169.254.xx.xx IP address means it's a limited connection, you have put in the wrong password.

On your computer, do the following:

Go to http://192.168.1.254/ > Wireless > Advanced Configuration Options > Privacy (change to WPA-PSK > Pre-Shared Key (type in a password for your wireless, keep it over 8 characters, letters and numbers if you want) > Save Changes.

Now, reboot your router for 30 seconds. When you go onto your iPhone, select your Eircom one and choose "forget this network". Then search again and use your new password (the pre-shared key). If your IP is 192.168.1.xx, then you've connected correctly.

    Genius!!

Thank you. It works, and to think I was about to get rid of it!

In my search to fix this I came across hundreds of posts on this issue on US and UK apple blogs and no one else can fix it. Thank you kind person.

I'd also take cpu-dude's advice and switch to wpa psk encryption, it's more secure than wep.

It's the only way to go (or WPA2-PSK) especially with the Netopia's :D

hey. i am having similar problems, I have a first gen iphone. Its Jailbroken with the 3.1.2 firmware installed(problem was happening with all previous firmware also). I have the router asking for a WPA-PSK [TKIP] password.

My wifi will work for a day or so and then i will have to reset the router for it to work again. Not a big thing but i would be pissing off housemates to continually reset it.

It does show that the ip address is connected as 169.254.xxx.xxx. The router is a Netgear wnr2000.

I have tried re entering the pass & resetting the net settings to reenter the pass and nothing works. Tried setting up a static ip address also and no joy.

ANY help would be much much appreciated.
