Toyota today reported a 436.94 billion yen (€3.27bn) net loss for the fiscal year to March, a larger loss than it had forecast and its worst result in company history.

If this a reported loss from one of the most reputable car manufacturers in the world I can imagine how bad some of the other less reputable manufacturers are doing.

Maybe now they'll cop onto making decent cars rather than the "bland" brand, i.e. The Avensis, Auris, Corolla. The IQ is pointless, but not as pointlesswhen you put it beside the urban cruiser.

The only decent car in the whole range is the Landcrusier, and they're too expensive to buy, service, and run.

    Supra, Celica and MR2 FTW.

Never found the LC expensive to run, very practical for what it is really.

Good point about the bland brand, I was recently in the market for a big(ish) 4 door saloon and just couldn't bring myself to look at the Avensis, so boring to look at it just put me right off. (vanity, tis true :o)

I heard there was a new Corolla Twin-Cam alike in the works, that got canned because of the downturn. Dull cars sell by the shedload to dull people. Cheap dull cars are the breadwinners for the major companies.

Also... IIRC, this is the First loss Toyota has ever made.

Well "The Ultimate Driving Machine" maker is also suffering so it looks like the end product has very little to do with the current plight of the motor industry:

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/BMW-Carmaker-Slumps-To-Net-Loss-Of-133-Million-Pounds-For-The-First-Quarter-Of-2009/Article/200905115276020?lpos=Business_Article_Related_Content_Region_3&lid=ARTICLE_15276020_BMW%3A_Carmaker_Slumps_To_Net_Loss_Of_133_Million_Pounds_For_The_First_Quarter_Of_2009

Toyota know their market place just like BMW, etc do, the problem is that people the world over are simply no longer buying new cars in droves that manufacturers became accustomed to recently.

Bland or not, their cars serve a purpose. Motoring is not just about A to B for me, but for an awful lot of people it is - not to mention all the companies that need a fleet. I don't even think the new Corolla is all that bad.

Well for all the companies that need a fleet.....we supplied 6 Toyotas this year so far. And, they were old model Avensis'. And at that, they only sold because they were so cheap. I havent seen too many new Models on the road.

For anyone who wants an A to B car, there are certainly better, and cheaper alternatives out there.

Even the landcruiser has a very outdated engine and outdated interior these days, even by Toyota standards. The LWB passenger version is over 60k, and the interior is old and the 3 litre engine only puts out 165bhp. Time they took the finger out!
Tpyically though, the bigger the company is, the larger the loss when it comes. So just because Toyota made a loss of that scale doesn't mean that all are suffering as much, even proportionally.
