THere's very few decent ones left. You'll pay a good bit extra for them. Beware of the Vanos issues on the Evo models (the ones you're looking for!)

If you do your homework, you would know not all M3's give VANOS trouble :)

For an E36 M3, you've 2 choices, pay a premium and get a well maintained, sorted and looked after car. Look for a so-called bargain and it'll end up costing you in the long run

Even so with the EVO.. if the servicing schedule has been maintained, there should be no issues. Afterall... "VANOS issues" are really filter and maintainence issues.

Try & spend every last penny you can muster up for the right car, will save you '000's in the long run....you will not buy quality for €5k, If you want the M wait until you may be able to widen the budget, much happier in the long run;) Whatever you decide you'll enjoy it, they're a hoot!!

considering the expenses ordinary cars can cost these days to maintain

it would be pure folly to buy cheapo M3.

It will undoubted cost you thousands in the long run.

10k upwards I think you should be paying at least for such a car.

thats crazy expensive for a 13y/o car with 100k plus miles, E46 M3s can be had for a few k more.

I'd say buying a cheap M3 is one of the most expensive things you can buy. Last time I checked the e46 M3s at the bottom of the price range (was around 20K a few months ago) were being reported as being quite tatty.
